Your health.

Your story.

Our mission.

Every day, I’m reminded of the strength and spirit of our community. The decisions you, your family and your neighbors make about your well-being shape the work we do at Genesis.

Your commitment to better health enables us to bring exceptional physicians to serve you. We’re pleased to welcome Anna Hay, M.D., who specializes in general cardiology, and Derrick Reedus, Sr., M.D., an expert in urology. Both are here to provide excellent, compassionate care close to home.

Blue Rock resident Tom Rayner chose Genesis for his double knee replacement surgery. He’s now back to running his small business and enjoying activities with his nine grandchildren. Tom’s story is a reminder that taking steps to improve your health can help you get back to what you love.

This issue includes our 2025 Community Benefit Report, highlighting how families across our region are building stronger, healthier lives. From education and support programs to new partnerships with local schools, these efforts reflect our long‑standing mission to provide greater access and compassionate care for every family we serve.

This spring, we’re opening the Behavioral Health Youth Crisis Stabilization Unit in Zanesville, providing more support for young people during challenging times.

Thanks to our partnership with Allwell Behavioral Health Services and the generous support of local and state partners, more families can benefit from specialized mental health resources in our community.

I hope you find moments of rest and renewal in the days ahead. As always, know that Genesis is here for you, ready to support you whenever you need us.

In good health,

Matthew J. Perry, President & CEO

Behavioral Health Connection

To help people connect to local care, Genesis and Allwell Behavioral Health Services opened a call center.

Behavioral Health Connection, started in 2025, offers help with non‑urgent mental health and substance use needs. The call center is available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. to Muskingum County residents, with plans to expand to multiple counties. Patients can call 740-455-8028 or be referred by their physician.

Thanks to our community partners, as we work together to improve behavioral health

Youth Crisis Stabilization Unit

We began construction for the Genesis Youth Crisis Stabilization Unit in 2025. Opening in spring 2026, this new facility will offer short-term residential care for youth who are experiencing a behavioral health crisis.

The center will provide support close to home and help reduce the need for hospitalization or placement outside the county. It will also connect youth to ongoing support as part of their care plan to help reduce future crises.

In collaboration with the Muskingum Area Mental Health and Recovery Services Board, Genesis was awarded American Rescue Plan Act grant funding through the Ohio Department of Behavioral Health, making this project possible.

General Cardiology

Heart health can feel overwhelming. Questions about risk, prevention and long-term care are common, especially for women, who often have different symptoms than men.

Having a trusted cardiologist who listens, explains and guides patients through every stage of care can make all the difference.

Guided by our strong commitment to cardiovascular care, Genesis Heart & Vascular Group welcomes Anna Hay, M.D., a general cardiologist dedicated to helping patients protect their heart health through prevention, education and advanced testing.

“I have a passion for prevention and women’s health. My goal is to help patients understand their heart health and identify concerns early so we can take the right steps to prevent disease before it advances.”

Dr. Hay specializes in cardiac imaging tests that help doctors find early signs of heart disease and create personalized care plans. By identifying issues sooner, patients can feel more confident about their health and future.

Originally from North Carolina, Dr. Hay was drawn to healthcare at a young age after seeing the positive impact her parents had as dentists. That exposure shaped her desire to care for others and guide patients through important health decisions.

When she is not caring for patients, Dr. Hay enjoys spending time with her husband and two children.

Dr. Hay is accepting patients at the Genesis Heart & Vascular Institute, 955 Bethesda Drive, First Floor, Zanesville. Patients can schedule appointments by calling 740-454-0804.

Community Impact Report - Based on 2025 outcomes

Kyle.Norton
Submitted by Kyle.Norton on

A healthy community starts with people who look out for each other. Caring for your health, encouraging a neighbor in need and choosing healthy habits all make a difference. In 2025, thousands of people across our region made choices that strengthened their well‑being and the well‑being of those around them.

What is community impact?

Community impact reflects Genesis HealthCare System’s ongoing commitment to improve your health and well-being.

Using what we learned from the Community Health Needs Assessment, we focus on the challenges that matter most.

Through programs, partnerships, education and outreach, Genesis joins with community members and local organizations to reduce barriers to care and support healthier living across our region.

This report highlights the ways these efforts drive lasting change across our region.

Community impact includes:

  • Expanding access to care through financial assistance, access and support services
  • Promoting prevention and early detection through education, outreach, health screenings and chronic disease support
  • Collaborating with community partners to address priority health needs and social factors that influence your well-being

Heathy start.

Healthy heart.

As we’ve turned the calendar to 2026, the choices we make for our health can shape a stronger, healthier year. Every day at Genesis, we see patients take charge of their health, by asking questions, taking action, making changes and seeking help to improve their lives.

February is National Heart Month, a reminder to focus on heart health. High blood pressure is a common risk for adults, and even when we feel well, paying attention to the warning signs of heart disease can make all the difference.

Stories like Julie McClure’s show the importance of acting quickly. When her blood pressure was high, she trusted her instincts and sought care. She received treatment for a heart attack and has regained her strength, moving forward with renewed purpose.

Annie Ferguson and Diane Wills are also making the most of each day. Annie, who received treatment for stage IV lung cancer, has returned to the job she loves. Diane remains in remission following lymphoma and continues regular checkups. She is back to her exercise routine and enjoys time with her grandchildren.

Early detection of lung cancer saves lives. Taking charge of your health can start with a simple, fast, low-dose CT scan. This screening is designed for people who have a history of smoking and are between 50 and 80 years old. Choosing to get screened is a way to protect your future and continue being there for the people who count on you.

These examples of taking action remind me why patients are at the center of everything we do. We’ve added new physicians in Cardiology, Internal Medicine, Vascular Surgery and Hematology/Oncology, making it easier for you and your family to access the expertise you need when you need it.

You are the hero of your health story. We’re honored to care for you and support you along your journey.

In good health,

Matthew J. Perry, President & CEO

Helping our community one playhouse at a time

Kyle.Norton

Local nonprofits are leaders in strengthening our community, and Genesis team members take pride in supporting their efforts.

One great example is Project Playhouse. Habitat for Humanity of Southeast Ohio’s Project Playhouse brings sponsors and volunteers together to build playhouses for local families. The playhouses provide children with a safe place to play, dream and feel at home.

Genesis Quality Management team members Maggie Palko, Bailee Hampton, Kimberly Johnson, Dana Woodruff, Heather Hartman, Dee Clapper, Cynthia Lanning and Michelle Huff built a playhouse for a local family in October 2025.

Heather Hartman, R.N., B.S.N., R.N.F.A., Surgical Clinical Reviewer for Genesis Quality Management, shared her team’s excitement about participating in Project Playhouse.

“Our team has looked forward to this project for the past year,” said Heather. “Working alongside our community, we built more than a playhouse. We created a safe, joyful space for a child, strengthened local connections and experienced firsthand the meaningful impact this project can have on a family.”

Genesis Primary Care welcomes Alex K. Kemei, M.D., specializing in internal medicine.

Dr. Kemei supports patients with wellness visits, acute illness care and chronic disease management.

“I love working with patients in small communities,” said Dr. Kemei. “I wanted to join Genesis because it reminds me of the rural area I was raised in.”

Dr. Kemei chose internal medicine because he wants to help patients manage their chronic diseases and improve their overall health.

“The heart of internal medicine is compassionate care,” said Dr. Kemei. “I’m always learning the best ways to treat patients. Internal medicine offers a lifetime of learning, because every patient’s needs are different.”

Dr. Kemei knows that explaining the causes of pain and what to expect from treatments is important to patients and their families.

When not caring for patients, Dr. Kemei enjoys exploring hiking trails, playing soccer and watching movies.

Dr. Kemei is accepting new patients at Genesis Primary Care, 1210 Ashland Ave., Zanesville. Patients can schedule appointments by calling 740-454-0370.
