Coal Miners Appreciation Day

Past and present coal miners are invited to attend a day held in their honor. Enjoy free health screenings, lunch and informative speakers on Friday, Sept. 4 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Ohio University Zanesville/Zane State College.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) will provide free confidential tests to detect coal workers’ pneumoconiosis, also known as black lung. The tests will be available from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in a mobile unit outside.

The events are free, but registrations are required for both the Coal Miners Appreciation Day and the NIOSH screenings. To register, go to “Education & Events” or call the Genesis Event Registration Line at (740) 454-4002, 800-322-4762 ext. 4002.

P.A.D. and Higher Level Screenings

September is P.A.D. Awareness Month and Spirit is offering free P.A.D. screenings. P.A.D. stands for Peripheral Arterial Disease, which is the narrowing and hardening of arteries in the legs because of fatty deposit buildup. Signs of P.A.D. include numbness or tingling in the legs, loss of hair on toes and feet or cramping in the legs that feels better with rest. The risk factors are diabetes, high blood pressure and history of coronary artery disease.

We are providing these screenings on two different days, Wednesday, Sept. 9 and Wednesday, Sept. 16. We are also offering a higher level heart & vascular screening package at a special rate of $99. Screenings time slots are filling fast, register online or you can call (740) 454-4002 or 800-322-4762 ext. 4002.

Learn to Reduce Falls

Wednesday, Sept. 2 or Thursday, Sept. 3

Most of us have fallen at some point in our lives. As we age, the likelihood of falling increases. We offer free classes to help you learn to decrease your risk of falls and to increase your balance and mobility.

There’s a Senior Lifestyles & Injury Prevention (SLIP) session where you can learn about the cause of falls, prevention and get a free fall-risk assessment by a physical therapist. A more in-depth class, Matter of Balance (MOB), is held once a week for eight weeks. You’ll learn to address the fear of falling and exercises to help with balance.

Find out how you can register today.
