Partnering with our community for better health

Healthy communities start with the people who live there. Across Southeastern Ohio, residents care deeply about the health of their families and neighbors.

To strengthen these efforts, Genesis HealthCare System partners with the Southeastern Ohio Health Improvement Collaborative, which includes the Zanesville-Muskingum, Perry, Noble and Morgan County Health Departments. Together, we use community feedback to identify and prioritize the health needs that matter most.

Listening to our communities

In 2024, residents, community partners and public health leaders participated in the Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) survey to identify the top health needs in our region. Their input guided the development of our 2025–2027 Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP). The plan focuses on the health needs that matter most in Southeastern Ohio.

Genesis priorities for 2025 to 2027

Based on this feedback, we identified three priority areas where we can work together to make the greatest impact:

  • Behavioral health

  • Chronic disease

  • Access to healthcare

These priorities guide our efforts to build a healthier, better future for Southeastern Ohio.

Find out what needs you said matter most. Visit genesishcs.org/chna2024.

A message from the Genesis HealthCare Foundation

In 2025, the dedication of our community continued to advance healthcare across the region by supporting the Genesis HealthCare Foundation.

10,000,000+

Raised for healthcare

These funds were reinvested into Genesis HealthCare System to support innovative equipment, safety tools, patient assistance programs and services that improve care for patients and team members.

Foundation support also helped families with transportation, essential needs and access to care. Investments continued to strengthen key services, including cancer care, hospice and palliative medicine, heart and vascular care, women’s and children’s services and surgical care.

Major highlights included progress on the Genesis Hospice Care Capital Campaign and successful events like the annual Genesis Foundation Pro-Am, which supports advanced equipment and program needs.

Expanding hospice care for our community

The new Genesis Hospice Care facility, opening in 2026, is made possible through support from our community, the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity, the J.W. & M.H. Straker Charitable Foundation and Genesis team members.

The new facility will replace the Morrison House, which has cared for families for more than 35 years and must now be replaced. It will feature private rooms, peaceful garden spaces and larger areas where families can gather and spend time together.

These improvements will help ensure compassionate end‑of‑life care continues for people throughout our region.

Thank you to our community

Thank you to everyone in our community for your support, kindness and trust. Your generosity helps make our region healthier and stronger.

We’re also grateful to the Genesis Board and Foundation Board members for their leadership and guidance. Thank you to the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity and Bethesda Care System for their continued support and commitment to our mission of caring for our communities.

Genesis HealthCare System recognized as a platinum award recipient for organ, eye and tissue donation

Southeastern Ohio organ donors enabled Genesis HealthCare System to receive a platinum award for organ donation and education as part of the LifeLine of Ohio 2025 DoNation Campaign.

“In 2025, our community made an extraordinary impact through generosity and compassion,” said Matthew Perry, Genesis HealthCare System President & CEO. “At Genesis, we had 37 organ donations from our community, which helped save 28 lives. That same spirit led to 26 tissue donations and 56 eye donations. Each organ donor has the power to save up to eight lives and help heal more than 75 others through tissue donation.”

In 2025, Genesis promoted the benefits of organ donation through public donor registration displays, speakers at local service clubs and nursing schools, and through social media. The DoNation Campaign is a national initiative that unites the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the organ donation community with workplaces nationwide to spread the importance of donation.

Local nonprofits are leaders in strengthening our community, and Genesis team members take pride in supporting their efforts.

One great example is Project Playhouse. Habitat for Humanity of Southeast Ohio’s Project Playhouse brings sponsors and volunteers together to build playhouses for local families. The playhouses provide children with a safe place to play, dream and feel at home.

Genesis Quality Management team members Maggie Palko, Bailee Hampton, Kimberly Johnson, Dana Woodruff, Heather Hartman, Dee Clapper, Cynthia Lanning and Michelle Huff built a playhouse for a local family in October 2025.

Heather Hartman, R.N., B.S.N., R.N.F.A., Surgical Clinical Reviewer for Genesis Quality Management, shared her team’s excitement about participating in Project Playhouse.

“Our team has looked forward to this project for the past year,” said Heather. “Working alongside our community, we built more than a playhouse. We created a safe, joyful space for a child, strengthened local connections and experienced firsthand the meaningful impact this project can have on a family.”

Genesis HealthCare System Earns “A” Hospital Safety Grade

emily.griffin
Submitted by emily.griffin on

The Leapfrog Group national award demonstrates commitment to patient safety

Genesis HealthCare System earned an “A” Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group, an independent national nonprofit watchdog focused on patient safety. Leapfrog assigns grades to hospitals across the country using evidence-based measures of patient safety focused exclusively on errors, accidents, injuries and infections.

“Our team is committed to providing high-quality healthcare,” said Scott Wegner, M.D., Chief Medical Officer, Genesis HealthCare System. “Earning an ‘A’ grade for Patient Safety from The Leapfrog Group reaffirms our efforts that benefit patients who rely on us to help them get well. We are pleased to be recognized for this achievement.”

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is the only hospital ratings program focused solely on preventable medical errors, infections and injuries in the United States. This program is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. Grades are updated twice annually, in the fall and spring.

About The Leapfrog Group
Founded in 2000 by large employers and other purchasers, The Leapfrog Group is a national nonprofit organization driving a movement for giant leaps for patient safety. The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade, Leapfrog's other main initiative, assigns letter grades to hospitals based on their record of patient safety, helping consumers protect themselves and their families from errors, injuries, accidents and infections.

As a proud Eagle Scout, Genesis Education Services Consultant Andrew Luallen gives back to the program that shaped his youth. He volunteers with Scouting America Muskingum Valley Council, mentoring the next generation as a local Cubmaster and Assistant Scoutmaster in his daughters’ units. “Scouting is more than outdoor skills,” said Andrew. “Scouting empowers young men and women to develop into future leaders who will make a positive impact on the world around them.”
