Genesis HealthCare System’s Pulmonary and Critical Care team recently performed its 100th Monarch Robotic-assisted Bronchoscopy. The Monarch system uses a flexible robotic tube, controlled by a doctor, to detect lung cancer earlier and more accurately, and in places that were previously unreachable without surgery.

“The Monarch system is another example of Genesis’ commitment to bringing the best resources, whether it is technology, doctors or facilities to our community. We were the second health system in Ohio to start using the Monarch system in fall 2020, which is critical because Ohio has one of the highest lung cancer rates in the U.S. This system makes a difference and helps saves lives,” said Emily Brawner, D.O., F.C.C.P, Pulmonary/Critical Care Medicine.

The Monarch Robotic-assisted Bronchoscopy procedure is performed by either Dr. Brawner or James Adamo, M.D., F.C.C.P., Pulmonary/Critical Care Medicine.

Genesis HealthCare System named 2021 Most Wired

Submitted by Kyle.Norton on

Genesis HealthCare System has earned CHIME Digital Health Most Wired recognition for the 6th consecutive year. Genesis has been certified level 9 for Ambulatory Care, certified level 9 Acute Care for 2021. These certifications place Genesis in the top 10% of all hospitals in the country utilizing integrated technology. The CHIME Digital Health Most Wired program conducts an annual survey to assess how effectively healthcare organizations apply core and advanced technologies into their clinical and business programs to improve health and care in their communities. The surveys assessed the adoption, integration and impact of technologies in healthcare organizations at all stages of development, from early development to industry leading.

“Utilizing leading edge information technology has long been one of Genesis’s key strategic priorities,” said Ed Romito, Chief Information Officer at Genesis HealthCare System. “We have a very talented team of IT professionals who are dedicated to delivering IT solutions that enable safer, faster, better health care. We’re pleased to be recognized as one of the top organizations in the country using state of the art information technology to improve patient safety and health outcomes for our patients.”

Most Wired validates that Genesis has integrated technology in every facet of the health care delivery system.  Using the best in class electronic medical record system from Epic, Genesis provides a single comprehensive medical record for each patient that includes all information, even for those who receive care from outside Genesis HealthCare System.  This allows our doctors and care team to access important medical information quickly and easily to deliver the safest care, make faster diagnosis, and minimize duplicate tests- which both increases safety and saves patients money.

The Genesis Epic system allows each patient to be an active member in their care through MyChart which is available on the patients’ phone or computer.  More than 65,000 patients currently use the free Genesis MyChart application. Patients can schedule appointments, see a provider via a video visit, message their doctor, request prescription refills, review test results and make payments. All these features are protected by a robust, comprehensive cybersecurity system implemented by the Genesis IT department.

A total of 36,674 organizations were represented in the 2021 Digital Health Most Wired program, which this year included four separate surveys: acute, ambulatory, long-term care and international. The surveys assessed the adoption, integration and impact of technologies in healthcare organizations at all stages of development, from early development to those leading in the industry. Genesis was one of only 100 organizations to achieve Level 9 Ambulatory certification, and one of only 72 organizations to achieve Level 9 Acute Care certification.

Each participating organization received a customized benchmarking report, an overall score and scores for individual levels in eight segments: infrastructure; security; business/disaster recovery; administrative/supply chain; analytics/data management; interoperability/population health; patient engagement; and clinical quality/safety. Participants can use the report and scores to identify strengths and opportunities for improvement. Participants also received certification based on their overall performance, with level 10 being the highest. Only 9 of the 36,674 participating organizations achieved a level 10 certification.

These awards recognize the healthcare system’s commitment to ensuring stroke patients receive the most appropriate treatment according to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines. Our team works diligently to ensure patients quickly receive the highest level of care.”

Genesis earned the award by meeting specific quality achievement measures for the diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients at a set level for a designated period. These measures include evaluation of the proper use of medications and other stroke treatments aligned with the most up-to-date, evidence-based guidelines with the goal of speeding recovery and reducing death and disability for stroke patients.

Genesis also received the Target: StrokeSM Honor Roll award. To qualify for this recognition, hospitals must meet quality measures developed to reduce the time between the patient’s arrival at the hospital and treatment with the clot-buster tissue plasminogen activator, or tPA, the only drug approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat ischemic stroke.

Additionally, Genesis HealthCare System received the Target: Type 2 Honor Roll award. To qualify for this recognition, hospitals must meet quality measures developed with more than 90% compliance for 12 consecutive months for the “Overall Diabetes Cardiovascular Initiative Composite Score.”

Genesis Recognized for Efforts in Supporting Breastfeeding

Earned 5 Stars from Ohio First Steps for Healthy Babies

Zanesville, Ohio (June 24, 2021) Genesis HealthCare System has been recognized with a 5-star rating for its promotion and support of successful breastfeeding by the Ohio First Steps for Healthy Babies program. The program is a joint effort of the Ohio Hospital Association and the Ohio Department of Health. Genesis earned this recognition by achieving the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding as defined by the World Health Organization and Baby-Friendly USA.

“Our team is honored to receive this recognition of our efforts to ensure babies have a healthy start to life through successful breastfeeding,” said Carolyn Blenis, Director of Genesis Women’s Services. “We understand the support a new mother receives from our staff can impact her decision to breastfeed. Increasing the number of breastfed newborns can lead to a decrease in future health conditions such as asthma, diabetes and obesity.”

The Ohio First Steps for Healthy Babies is a voluntary breastfeeding designation program that recognizes maternity centers in Ohio that promote, protect and support breastfeeding. A star is awarded for every two steps achieved in the program, with five stars being the highest level of achievement.

Demonstrates high-quality stroke care

Zanesville, Ohio (April 19, 2021) – Genesis HealthCare System earned primary stroke recertification by the Healthcare Facilities Accreditation Program (HFAP), the nation’s original independent accreditation organization recognized by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Primary stroke certification means that hospitals can stabilize and treat acute stroke patients, provide acute care, and administer tissue plasminogen activator (tPA), an FDA-approved treatment for ischemic strokes, as well as other therapies safely and efficiently.

“Achieving this recertification is the result of our team’s commitment to providing fast, high-quality stroke care to patients. Our experienced physicians, nurses and staff work tirelessly to provide life-saving care to patients when they arrive at the Emergency Department, in addition to follow-up care,” said Keela Barker, Director of Rehabilitation & Ambulatory Services at Genesis. “We also dedicate numerous resources to educating people about recognizing the signs of stroke.”

HFAP stroke certification is a three-year award with a mid-cycle review at 18 months. HFAP has been certifying stroke centers since 2006 and currently offers the most options for facilities seeking stroke care certification. HFAP is the nation’s only accreditation program that certifies the full stroke continuum – stroke ready, primary stroke and comprehensive stroke.
