Genesis HealthCare System’s Pulmonary and Critical Care team recently performed its 100th Monarch Robotic-assisted Bronchoscopy. The Monarch system uses a flexible robotic tube, controlled by a doctor, to detect lung cancer earlier and more accurately, and in places that were previously unreachable without surgery.

“The Monarch system is another example of Genesis’ commitment to bringing the best resources, whether it is technology, doctors or facilities to our community. We were the second health system in Ohio to start using the Monarch system in fall 2020, which is critical because Ohio has one of the highest lung cancer rates in the U.S. This system makes a difference and helps saves lives,” said Emily Brawner, D.O., F.C.C.P, Pulmonary/Critical Care Medicine.

The Monarch Robotic-assisted Bronchoscopy procedure is performed by either Dr. Brawner or James Adamo, M.D., F.C.C.P., Pulmonary/Critical Care Medicine.

Zanesville, Ohio (Oct. 5, 2020) – Genesis HealthCare System recently became the second health system in Ohio to use the new innovative Monarch Robotic-assisted Bronchoscopy. The Genesis Pulmonary Care team uses the Monarch system to detect lung cancer earlier and more accurately. The device enables physicians to access small, previously hard to reach places in and around the lungs without incisions. James Adamo, M.D., F.C.C.P., Pulmonary/Critical Care Medicine, and Emily Brawner, D.O., F.C.C.P, Pulmonary/Critical Care Medicine, who are part of the Genesis Pulmonary Care team, perform the procedure.

“Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide, and Ohio has one of the highest rates of lung cancer in the U.S. Genesis is continually adding new innovative ways to care for our community. The Monarch system is a huge step forward in diagnosing lung cancer earlier and increasing chances of survival for our patients,” said Dr. Adamo.

The Monarch uses a flexible robotic tube, controlled by a doctor, to travel through the mouth, down the airway into the lungs. A camera on the tip of the tube provides 3-D views during the screening allowing doctors to navigate complex passageways. The tube is also equipped with technology to take a biopsy.

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide. The disease hides in the lungs and usually does not show symptoms until it is too late. That changes now.

Diagnosing lung cancer earlier and more accurately saves lives

Listen to Emily Brawner describe the Monarch Robotic-assisted Bronchoscopy System on the Sounds of Good Health with Genesis Podcast

As part of our commitment to provide the best care, we have invested in innovative technology to overcome the traits that make lung cancer so deadly.

The revolutionary Monarch Robotic-assisted Bronchoscopy has a flexible tube, 3D camera and precision control. With Monarch, our doctors can search for cancer in a maze of passageways. When something suspicious is located, they can take biopsies that were previously unreachable without surgery. The results are earlier and more accurate diagnosis than ever before.

Additionally, since it is minimally invasive, patients go home the same day of the procedure.
