Pediatric Hospital Unit

At Genesis Hospital, you’ll find one of the few dedicated inpatient pediatric and adolescent units in southeastern Ohio.

Parents and guardians may visit at any time. Visiting hours for other guests are 10:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Children must be at least 12 years old to visit a patient at the unit.

We provide care for a variety of medical diagnosis, as well as some post-operative surgical care. 

 

Nursery Hospital Unit

Newborn Nursery provides dedicated nursery staff and a pediatric hospitalist to care for your infant after their birth.

Our Special Care Nursery is a level 2 nursery and is available if your infant needs a higher-level care. 

 

Pediatric Rehabilitation

Pediatric rehabilitation serves children who have developmental delays or physical challenges due to trauma, disease or a genetic condition. Treatment is tailored to your child’s needs.

To arrange pediatric rehabilitation services, ask your pediatrician for a referral. After we receive a physician’s prescription for an evaluation, you may schedule an appointment.

 

Developmental Evaluations

If your child shows signs of developmental delays in speech or language, oral-motor skills, social interaction, motor skills or integration skills, a physician can make a referral for a developmental evaluation.

A team of speech, occupational and physical therapists evaluates your child and recommends therapies to enhance development.

Hearing is Healing for Man with New Cochlear Implant

Technology for those suffering with hearing loss

Jerry Nahanee, age 56, started to experience hearing loss in his late 30s. When he could no longer understand speech, he wore a hearing aid. As his hearing continued to diminish, he wore one on each ear. Over time, Jerry’s speech began to slur because he couldn’t hear. He compensated for his hearing loss by using closed-captioned TV, followed visual cues and was good at lip reading. However, conversation was difficult, if not impossible.

While living in Eugene, Oregon, Jerry’s sister Ellen Knight, and their mother, explored a cochlear implant for Jerry. The nearest otolaryngologist (ear, nose and throat specialist) who could perform the procedure was several hours away from Eugene. Logistically, it just wasn’t feasible.

In 2018 Jerry and his sister moved to Nashport to live with their aunt, Mary Norris. Jerry’s hearing loss was a source of frustration for him and his family. Mary and Ellen would write notes or yell to communicate with Jerry. Since he could not hear his own voice, Jerry also yelled.

Discouraged by their effort to converse, Mary made an appointment for Jerry to see a hearing instrument specialist and were told hearing aids were not his issue. Jerry was referred to Max Pusz, M.D., otolaryngologist, Genesis ENT Group. After a series of hearing tests at Genesis Audiology, Dr. Pusz determined Jerry was a candidate for a cochlear implant, and the procedure was scheduled.

 “It’s rare to have an ENT in a community the size of Zanesville be able to perform cochlear implants,” Dr. Pusz said. “I’m glad we offer local access. It’s so beneficial to our patients to have this surgery, and Jerry was an ideal candidate.”

Genesis Audiology conducts the hearing tests leading up to a cochlear implant as well as the follow-up appointments to adjust the external device, so all the care for the cochlear implant can be provided locally.

Following the nearly two-hour surgery and monthlong healing process, Jerry had his cochlear implant activated. The change was immediate. He soon began to lower the volume of his voice on his own because for the first time in years he could hear himself.

Learning to hear again requires training our brain and ears

“We are amazed at Jerry’s progress. It has made a huge difference,” Ellen said. “Six weeks after surgery, Mary and I were in the front seat of the car and Jerry was in the backseat. I was talking to Mary about the Oregon Ducks and Jerry joined the conversation. I can’t tell you how long it had been since he joined us in conversation. He wasn’t reading our lips or looking for visual cues. He actually heard us.”

The decision to have an implant includes a commitment by the patient to work at hearing. Although sound enters through the ear, it is interpreted by the brain. “The longer someone goes without sound, the more difficult it is to understand speech,” explained Dr. Pusz. “With our ears, it’s like a ‘use it or lose it’ sense. The brain must be taught the sounds again. It’s not like putting on a pair of eyeglasses and being able to immediately see better.”

Jerry listened to audio books and followed along so he could relearn consonant blends, like “ch” and “sh” that had become slurred over time because they were not heard. Dr. Pusz finds that the success rate of a cochlear implant is patient-dependent. Patients have a higher success rate if post-surgery therapy plans are followed. “Jerry is an extremely focused, compliant patient, which expedited his progress,” said Dr. Pusz.

Reading the Bible aloud as a family every evening and helping with children’s programs at his church are additional sounds of joy for Jerry. For someone who loves to be with people, hearing those he’s around is the start of a new life.

When to see and ear, nose and throat specialist

An ENT is a medical ear doctor who treats more than hearing loss. Conditions such as ear pain, balance issues, ringing in the ears, vertigo or persistent ear infections can all be assessed by an ENT. Medical conditions with the nose and throat are also referred to this type of specialist. The ENT specialists are trained to perform surgery on the ears, nose and throat.

When to see an audiologist for hearing loss

Audiologists are trained professionals who test the type and amount of hearing loss. People of all ages – from infants to seniors – can get hearing tests at Genesis Audiology. They offer a wide range of services with licensed, certified staff to meet the needs of inpatients or outpatients having trouble hearing. Services include:

Rehab Team Helps Accident Victim on Road to Recovery

Patient required physical, speech and occupational therapy

Brad Hollingsworth and his cycling partner were riding near Zanesville when they were hit by a car. His cycling partner didn’t survive, and Brad was flown by helicopter to a Level I trauma center where he spent 20 days in the hospital.

When it came time to go home, Brad had a decision to make. “They said I could continue my rehabilitation at Genesis or go someplace else. I knew I wanted to come here,” Brad said. “I knew I would be treated well, and I would get the care I needed.”

Broken back and traumatic brain injury survivor

When Brad first came to Genesis Rehabilitation Services, his physical therapist reviewed his medical records to develop a plan and was surprised by the severity of Brad’s injuries. He had a broken back and a traumatic brain injury with more than a dozen brain bleeds. Brad was in a back brace, couldn’t lift more than 15 pounds, wasn’t able to drive, and his conversations were fragmented because he had problems choosing the correct word. He began physical, speech and occupational therapy three hours daily two times a week.

The caring staff at Genesis Rehabilitation Services designed a plan to help him gain confidence and reach his goal. “The therapists tailored exercises to my injuries and the levels I wanted to achieve. They focused on what I wanted in life,” Brad said.

Physical therapy is a holistic healing experience

Brad appreciated having all his therapy at one time at the same location because he and his wife have two small children. Berkeley DiNicola, MS, CCC/SLP, a speech-language pathologist at Genesis, helped Brad improve his concentration by doing complex thinking in noisy and distracting environments. “Brad was extremely motivated to do everything he could to improve his concentration in treatment sessions and at home," DiNicola said.

Less than four months after the accident, Brad began driving, running, swimming and working two days a week. “I’m very fortunate to have survived,” Brad said. His cycling partner, Brenda Hoffman, who didn’t survive, was a therapist at Genesis Rehabilitation Services. Along with physical healing, the therapists who worked alongside Hoffman helped Brad heal emotionally. “The therapy wasn’t just a service transaction – like driving through a fast-food restaurant. It was a holistic healing experience for me. The rehabilitation staff has been a huge part of getting me where I am today.”

Support Groups

Our free support groups for life after a stroke or living with Parkinson's disease provide a place to connect with others who share similar experiences during or after a diagnosis. As an attendee, you will find an opportunity to listen to others share personal successes and challenges, as well as receive and offer emotional comfort and moral support.

Parkinson's disease Support Group

Genesis Outpatient Rehabilitation offers Parkinson’s disease support group sessions for the community. The free sessions are open to past and present patients, caretakers and loved ones.  

Participants engage with guest speakers, medical professionals and attendees to learn strategies to help cope with a Parkinson’s diagnosis. Topics vary, including managing resting tremors, limb stiffness, accessibility and stress management.

Meetings are open to both existing patients, former patients and non-patients of Genesis dealing with Parkinson’s disease.

Regular attendance is encouraged in order for attendees to obtain all of the education and resources needed to better cope with their loved one's diagnosis. 

Disclosure of personal information is at the discretion of each attendee. Only the facilitators and administrative assistants have access to attendee contact information. It is solely the participant’s decision if they want to share personal information with other attendees.

Stroke Support Group

If you have survived a stroke or are a loved one caring for a stroke survivor, consider attending our support group to learn coping strategies after a stroke, lifestyle changes at home and in public and coping mechanisms to relieve stress on the caregiver. The group is open to existing patients, former patients and non-patients of Genesis, as well as family members and caregivers of stroke survivors.

Genesis offers a support group for stroke survivors, families and caregivers. Stroke survivors can reach their full potential after rehabilitation by connecting with people who have experienced similar challenges. 

There are speakers, discussions, light refreshments and the following at each meeting:

  • Practical tools for survivors to regain a sense of normalcy in everyday life.

  • Opportunities for stroke survivors to support and learn from each other.

  • Information about adaptive technologies you can try.

The group is open to the community and free to attend. You do not have to be a patient of the Genesis HealthCare System to attend.

The inpatient and outpatient speech team at Genesis offers services tailored to meet the needs of patients needing rehabilitation for a variety of diagnoses, including stroke, brain tumor, neurological conditions, neuromuscular disease, head and neck surgery and any other condition that affects daily tasks.

The licensed speech-language pathologists work with orders from your physician to ensure the best possible care. Speech-language pathologists treat cognitive deficits in various areas, including orientation, attention, memory, reasoning, problem-solving, and safety awareness. Speech-language pathologists assess and treat swallowing disorders, speech and voice disorders, and expressive and receptive language disorders.

Our speech-language pathologists work as an integral part of the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) interprofessional team to address feeding, swallowing and neurodevelopmental needs. Speech-language pathologists provide education and support to families, helping them prepare to transition home with their infant.

Treatments and procedures

At your first session, a physical therapist will discuss your symptoms, daily activities and treatment plan. The personalized treatments are designed to improve strength, range of motion, flexibility, endurance, coordination and/or balance.

Our therapists begin by trying to reduce pain and swelling using techniques such as manual therapy, heat, cold, water or ultrasound. Exercise is typically included in physical therapy and can include activities such as stretching, core exercises, weightlifting or walking. You might also learn exercises to do on your own at home.

Several locations for outpatient physical therapy

We have several locations near your home or work to help get you back to enjoying life. Physical therapy focuses on the neck, shoulders, upper and lower back, hips, knees and ankles. Physical therapists help with gait (walking) training, balance exercises and activities specific to your work or sports.

You’ll also find physical therapy at Genesis HealthCenter New Concord, the Genesis Perry County Medical Center in Somerset and the Genesis Orthopedic Center in Zanesville.

Genesis Hospital Inpatient Therapy

If you are hospitalized as an inpatient at Genesis, you may have a physical therapy consult placed by a provider to check your strength and mobility status. After the evaluation is completed, you may be added to the physical therapy caseload and receive ongoing interventions to help improve your strength, mobility and independence. The Inpatient Physical Therapy team members collaborate with you, your provider, nursing and case management to assist with safe discharge recommendations for each patient once medical status is stable.

Pediatric assessments and developmental evaluations for your child

If your child shows signs of developmental delays in speech or language, oral-motor skills, social interaction, motor skills or integration skills, a physician can make a referral for a developmental evaluation.

We have a skilled team of speech, occupational and physical therapists to design treatments tailored to your child's needs. Aquatic therapy is also available for children at the Muskingum County Family YMCA (MCFYMCA).

Occupational therapy for children

Our compassionate therapists provide occupational therapy just for children. Occupational therapy helps with activities that occupy a child’s time, such as sensory integration, self-regulation and self-care, including dressing, grooming, feeding, toileting, play skills and fine and visual motor skills. Neurological deficits, learning disabilities, retained reflexes, developmental delays, sensory processing dysfunction, ADHD and genetic disorders can impact these skills.

Private speech therapy sessions

We provide specialized speech therapy services for a range of pediatric speech and language diagnoses, including hearing loss, articulation, language disorders, feeding/swallowing and autism spectrum disorders. If you’re concerned about your child’s language or speech, call your primary care physician and request a referral for an evaluation with one of our specialty-trained speech-language pathologists. Our dedicated facility has four private treatment rooms for individualized speech therapy.

Physical therapy with treadmill-assisted gait training

Our pediatric physical therapists care for children from birth to 13 years of age who have a temporary or permanent disability, as well as children who are having difficulty developing gross motor movement or have pain with movement. We also care for babies who have torticollis or other birth-related problems, including prematurity, in our neonatal program.

Collaborating with your child's pediatrician to create a treatment plan, our therapists can help your child develop or regain movement, promote healing and improve function. We work towards your child's individual goals through play in our sensory gym with playground equipment and also have treadmill-assisted gait (walking) training and aquatic physical therapy.

In addition to physical therapy education for children and their families, we evaluate and instruct them in the use of braces, walkers, wheelchairs or other medical equipment to assist with mobility and tasks of daily living, such as bathing.

Genesis Rehabilitation Services has a dedicated facility just for children. We have the only facility in our area specifically designed for children. The facility provides a calming environment for children. The space is designed with your child’s needs in mind. From the pint-sized chairs to the color of the decor, everything is tailored to their needs.

Our child-friendly facility has a multipurpose exercise area with swings, hammocks, playhouses, a slide, climbing walls and bikes. Quality, compassionate pediatric rehab is offered closer to home, so you don’t always have to travel to a major metropolitan area for care.

Your treatment could include exercises to increase strength and flexibility. Evaluating your daily environment to assess changes may help you continue your activities. Education is available for joint protection and compensatory techniques to perform daily living skills safely and efficiently, simulating daily tasks and job duties, education and using assistive devices and equipment such as computer-aided adaptive equipment, reachers, long-handled shoe horns, long-handled sponges, sock aids and other recommendations as needed.

Fabricating custom splints and fitting braces is also available. Additional treatments use ultrasound or paraffin. Dry heated air (fluidotherapy) might also be used for desensitization and hypersensitivity of your hand, wrist, elbow, foot or ankle.

Genesis Rehabilitation Services provides an experienced and compassionate team to give you one-on-one attention. You and your immediate caregiver are included in every step of the treatment and will receive education on your occupational therapy.

Convenient locations for occupational therapy

Genesis Rehabilitation Services offers occupational therapy at several convenient locations throughout our region, so you don’t have to travel far from home for care. Occupational therapy is available at Genesis Outpatient Rehabilitation, Genesis Pediatric Rehab, Genesis HealthCenter New Concord, Genesis Orthopedic Center and the Genesis Perry County Medical Center in Somerset.

Occupational therapy services are also available for inpatients at Genesis Hospital. If you are hospitalized as an inpatient at Genesis, you may have an occupational therapy consultation ordered by a provider to assess your strength and ability to perform daily activities, such as bathing, dressing and grooming tasks. After the evaluation is completed, you may be added to the Occupational Therapy caseload to receive ongoing interventions to assist with improving your strength and independence. The Inpatient Occupational Therapy team members collaborate with you, your provider, nursing and case management to assist with safe discharge recommendations for each patient once medical status is stable.

What to Expect at the Wound Care Center

Your Genesis Wound Care Center® doctor and staff are a resource for the care and maintenance of your wounds.

The doctors and staff at the Wound Care Center will provide you with special treatment plans. The plans will help heal your wound as quickly as possible. Your wound will be evaluated completely. You may need to get tests that will tell us more about your wound. You will be given information about the treatment for your wound. You will be taught how you can prevent new wounds.

    What Will Happen During My First Visit?
    • We will examine you and ask you about your personal and family medical history so we can develop a plan of care just for you.
    • We will examine your wound.
    • We might remove dead tissue in and around your wound (debridement).
    • We will teach you how to care for your wound at home.
    • We will schedule further testing, if it is needed.
    What About Follow Up Visits?

    Your personal plan will require regular visits to the Wound Care center. Each time you come to the center, we will check your wound to see how much progress has been made. We will review your test results with you. We will remove dead tissue from your wound if needed. We will answer questions you may have about how to care for your wound and what is going to happen next. With your permission, we may communicate with your primary doctor and update him/her on your condition.

    What Can I Do to Help?

    We need your commitment to your treatment plan. The best things you can do are:

    • Care for your wound at home as directed by your healthcare provider.
    • Eat a healthy diet.
    • Rest according to your healthcare provider's instructions.
    • Take medication as ordered.
    • Stop smoking.
    • Return for your follow up appointment.  
    Call Us if You Notice:
    • Increasing redness around the wound
    • Warm or red skin
    • A red streak spreading from the wound
    • An increase in wound drainage 
    • Pus or cloudy fluid draining from the wound
    • A foul odor or abnormal smell
    • Fever or chills
    • Increased pain
    • Tenderness at or in the area of the infected bone
    • Increased swelling around the wound
    • The wound gets bigger
    • The wound has blisters, black or brown dead tissue
    • Increased weakness
    • A wound that won't heal
    Health Insurance Tips
    • You may receive multiple bills for the services you received at the Wound Care Center.
    • You will receive a bill from the hospital.
    • You will also receive a bill from the doctor(s) providing care to you.
    • You may also receive separate bills from the laboratory testing, diagnotic services and from the doctors interpreting your test results.  
    Will My Insurance Pay?

    Most health insurance companies will pay for the care you receive at the Wound Care Center. Because there are many different insurance plans, it is hard for us to know what your insurance will pay. Many plans have amounts you will have to pay. Your plan may also have specific coverage limits. You should call your insurance company with questions you have about your coverage.

    Will You File Insurance Claims for Me?

    Yes. We will bill your insurance company based on the information that you supply when you register. If your insurance company changes at any time during your treatment at the Wound Care Center, it is your responsibility to inform us.
