The Radiation Oncology Practice Accreditation (ROPA) program provides radiation oncologists with third-party, impartial peer review and evaluation of patient care. Facility staff, equipment, treatment-planning and treatment records as well as patient-safety policies and quality control/quality assessment activities are assessed.

Palliative Care

Palliative Care is available close to home

When you or someone you love is facing a serious illness, it’s a challenge. There can be many stresses – for both the family and the patient.

Genesis provides palliative care to offer comfort for patients and their families dealing with serious illnesses. Palliative means comfort in Latin, and that’s exactly the goal of palliative care – provide comfort for patients at any age or stage of an illness. The specialized medicine helps patients deal with the symptoms, pain and stress of a serious illness. We provide care to patients when they are in the hospital, in the Genesis Cancer Care Center, in assisted living facilities and in their homes.

Conditions treated

The illnesses can include:

  • Advanced lung diseases (such as COPD or emphysema)
  • Advanced heart disease (such as heart failure)
  • Cancer
  • Advanced liver or kidney disease
  • Stroke or neurological disease
Palliative Care

Tests and treatments

You can get palliative care along with the treatments you’re receiving. The goal of the specialized medicine is to relieve suffering by treating the total pain that can include physical, psychological and/or spiritual.

In a serious illness, the symptoms can include pain, shortness of breath, fatigue (tiredness), nausea, difficulty sleeping, depression, anxiety and decreased appetite.

You can get help with:

  • complex pain
  • shortness of breath (dyspnea)
  • fatigue (tiredness)
  • depression
  • anxiety
  • difficulty sleeping (insomnia)
  • decreased appetite

Most insurance companies cover palliative care, and the services can be provided in the hospital, at home or in assisted living facilities.

Meet the team

The goal is to offer you and your loved ones the best possible quality of life and make sure you’re getting the best possible care. It’s a team effort that includes access to care such as:

  • specialized physicians
  • advanced practice nurses
  • registered nurses
  • chaplains
  • social workers
  • psychologists
  • massage therapists
  • music therapists
  • pharmacists
  • volunteers

Why choose us?

You don’t want to travel long distances when you have a loved one with a serious illness. We’re here to provide care closer to home. The care can be provided in the hospital, at home or in an assisted living facility.

What’s the difference between Palliative Care and Hospice?

Palliative care doesn’t mean it’s the end of life. Hospice is a type of palliative care designed for patients with a life expectancy of less than 6 months.

Palliative Care can help you and your family by:

  • Managing pain and symptoms that come with some serious illnesses
  • Support and guidance in making difficult medical decisions
  • Navigating the health care system by working with your physicians to make sure you’re getting the best care that’s right for you
  • Emotional and spiritual support for you and your family

How can we help?

We welcome your questions and look forward to helping improve the quality of life for patients in our community dealing with a serious illness.

National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC)

National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC)

Highest quality breast care services for patients

Accreditation through the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC) demonstrates a commitment to the highest standards of care for patients with breast diseases including cancer. The NAPBC works with other professional organizations to provide the most efficient and contemporary breast care using scientific evidence about what works best for patients. The NAPBC monitors compliance for standards at each breast center. The Genesis Breast Care Center maintains the highest quality of care by participating in the NAPBC.

Comprehensive program with a team approach

Breast centers with a NAPBC accreditation like the Genesis Breast Care Center develop a comprehensive program that includes a continuing spectrum of care from education, screening, prevention, diagnosis and treatment to survival. As part of the accreditation, Genesis has a multidisciplinary group such as physicians, nurse navigators, certified nurse practitioners and others that form the NAPBC Breast Program Leadership Committee and Breast Team. This group is committed to patients and our community and ensures coordination of all breast care services to remain the highest quality.

Qualified staff and coordinated care

NAPBC accreditation requires a qualified staff, facility, procedures, imaging and supportive care. Each center must meet regularly for review of patient cases, provide required services, conduct quality review, provide education, submit data, and pass a site survey. Surveys occur every three years.

Genesis Breast Care Center offers high-quality care

Achieving excellence in cancer treatment

COC-accredited centers like the Genesis Cancer Care Center demonstrate a commitment to patients and the community by providing education on preventing or finding cancer early; offering treatment and therapies; and supporting patients through survival. As part of maintaining COC accreditation, a multidisciplinary team at Genesis, the COC Committee, meets regularly to coordinate care and ensure quality measures continue to be met.

Adhering to COC requirements

American Board for Certification (ABC) of Orthotics and Prosthetics

Certified mastectomy fitters are professionally credentialed

The American Board for Certification of Orthotics and Prosthetics (ABC) is the national certifying and accrediting body for orthotic, prosthetic and pedorthic professions. The ABC has become the quality standard for certification. It provides credentialing for mastectomy fitters and facility accreditation for the Centers for Medicare/Medicaid Services (CMS), Veterans’ Administrations and other health care insurance providers. The Genesis Women’s Boutique mastectomy fitters are certified by the ABC.

Awarded to orthotic centers that achieve excellence in prosthetics

Maintaining accreditation through the ABC demonstrates our commitment to providing certified professionals for your personalized fitting after a mastectomy or lumpectomy. The Genesis Cancer Care Center and Women’s Boutique meet the standards to ensure you reach your goals for fittings. Insurance companies see this as a sign of quality as they determine payment for the services at the Women’s Boutique based on your insurance plan

Certified mastectomy fitters meet requirements

The certified mastectomy fitters at Genesis meet education and experience requirements to be eligible to take the certification exam. After they receive their certification, fitters must maintain continuing education for maintenance of this credential.

Our certified fitters help you look and feel your best

After a mastectomy or lumpectomy, you want to look and feel your best. We’re committed to providing a personalized fitting for a prosthetic breast, shaper and bra. We make sure to take the time with you to meet your needs. We have supplies like prostheses, bras and shapers for purchase on-site, and we can order items to be shipped to your home. We’ll assist with contacting your insurance for coverage. Insurance covers replacement prosthetics and bras at certain intervals. If you don’t have insurance, our compassionate staff can help you determine if you qualify for financial assistance.

Cancer Rehabilitation

Cancer Rehabilitation

When you have cancer, you may need help getting back to your normal activities. Our cancer team works with you to determine your goals for post-cancer treatment. Our experienced therapists help you achieve your goals and return to a healthy lifestyle. There are several types of rehabilitation therapy we provide at Genesis.

Regain your strength and independence

After cancer treatment, Genesis wants you to get back to feeling your best. That’s why we offer a comprehensive cancer rehabilitation program complete with a wide spectrum of therapies. The Genesis Cancer Rehabilitation program can help you:

  • Gain energy, strength and endurance
  • Feel more comfortable
  • Increase your independence
  • Reduce swelling (lymphedema)
  • Sleep better

Breast cancer rehabilitation

After you’ve been treated for breast cancer, you may not have the same flexibility, range of motion or energy levels as before. Rehabilitation after breast cancer is designed to help you regain strength, mobility and reduce swelling after radiation, chemotherapy or surgery. As part of the Genesis breast cancer rehabilitation program, you’ll meet with a physical therapist who designs personalized treatment recommendations. Your plan may include manual therapy, exercise and education to prevent lymphedema, improve and maintain your shoulder’s range of motion and strength, and enhance your fitness level.

Ask your doctor for a referral to this program that you may participate in before, during and after cancer treatment.

Other therapies available

Genesis offers additional therapy services to assist in your healing and recovery after cancer treatment. Ask your Genesis patient navigator or doctor if you would benefit from rehabilitation services, which include:

  • Lymphedema therapy
  • Occupational therapy
  • Physical therapy
  • Speech-language therapy

Lymphedema therapy

If a surgeon removes your lymph nodes during cancer treatment, you may experience lymphedema – swelling in your arms, legs, neck or abdomen. A Genesis therapist trained in lymphedema treatment can teach you how to relieve symptoms through massage, bandaging, exercising and other techniques.

Occupational therapy

Occupational therapy helps you relearn or learn how to better complete everyday tasks after an illness, surgery, side effect or injury. Depending on your needs, occupational therapies may include:

  • Home skills such as housekeeping, gardening and cooking
  • Personal care activities such as dressing and eating
  • Personal management like balancing a checkbook, keeping a schedule
  • Skills important in driving a car or motor vehicle
  • Special vehicle determinations (if hand brakes are needed for vehicle)
  • Vision, thinking and judgment skills needed for driving

Physical therapy

Physical therapy helps in the recovery from illness, surgery, side effects or injury through prescribed exercise. You will meet with a physical therapist who will examine you and talk to you about your symptoms and your daily activity. He or she will then work with you on a treatment plan. First, your therapist will try to reduce your pain and swelling. Your physical therapist also may use manual therapy, education, and techniques such as heat, cold, water, ultrasound, and electrical stimulation.

Physical therapy almost always includes exercise. It can include stretching, core exercises, weight lifting, and walking. Your physical therapist may teach you an exercise program, so you can do it at home.

Speech-language therapy

Speech therapy helps in the recovery from illness, surgery, side effect or injury. This therapy improves your ability to communicate, eat and swallow including:

  • Recognizing swallowing problems
  • Reducing long pauses or slurring
  • Reducing nasal sounds when face muscles get too relaxed
  • Improving speech patterns or rhythms and pronouncing words
  • Learning other ways to speak, such as alphabet cards, cell phone or tapes
  • Learning which foods are better to eat if it's hard to swallow

    Biotherapy

Depending on the type of biotherapy used, you may receive this treatment at the Genesis Cancer Care Center in the chemotherapy and infusion suite or in your home. Biotherapy is a treatment that uses substances made from living organisms to treat diseases like cancer. These substances can occur naturally in the body, or they may be manufactured in a laboratory. Some biotherapies stimulate or suppress the immune system to help the body fight cancer. Other biotherapies attack cancer cells, which may help keep them from growing or even kill them. They may also help lessen some side effects caused by some cancer treatments.

    Chemotherapy

Our unique chemotherapy pods are designed like private, first-class airline seating with heated massage capabilities to help ease the stress of treatment. iPads are available for use. The room features large floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Genesis Gorsuch Fitness Trail.

Chemotherapy uses medications to kill cells that grow quickly, including cancer. This treatment also affects some healthy cells in your digestive tract, bone marrow and hair follicles, which can lead to side effects. Your Genesis care team will help you manage side effects while making sure you get the most benefit from chemotherapy.

We offer the following methods to administer chemotherapy:

    • Central line catheters (short-term and long-term)
    • Infusion
    • Intramuscular injection
    • Intrathecal therapy
    • Oral medication
    • Peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) line
    • Port
    • Subcutaneous injection

    Imaging

Imaging procedures are used to diagnose cancer and evaluate if treatment is working, and to see if the cancer has spread or has been contained. Imaging suites are designed to make you comfortable while delivering up to 60 percent less radiation when compared to older imaging technology. The newer technology produces images within seconds.

    Our imaging procedures include:

    • Computed tomography (CT)
    • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
    • Positron emission tomography (PET)

    Immunotherapy

Depending on the type of immunotherapy used, you may receive this treatment at the Genesis Cancer Care Center in the chemotherapy and infusion suite or in your home. Immunotherapy is a type of biological therapy that helps your immune system fight cancer. The immune system helps your body fight infections and other diseases. It’s made up of white blood cells and organs and tissues of the lymph system.

    Infusion therapy

The Cancer Care Center has a chemotherapy and infusion suite. The types of infusion therapy you may receive here include chemotherapy, immunotherapy, biologic therapy, blood transfusion, platelet transfusions, iron infusions, IV fluids, electrolyte replacement and therapeutic phlebotomy.

    Pharmacy services

Our on-site pharmacy offers expert oncology-trained pharmacists and the most-up-to-date cancer protocols. Our pharmacists provide education regarding your cancer treatment and side effect management.

    Radiation therapy

Radiation therapy uses high-energy waves that you can’t feel to kill cancer cells. Your doctor will recommend the type of radiation treatment that’s right for you and your condition. Our two linear accelerators enable us to offer the latest radiation treatments with little or no wait time. These treatments include high-dose hypo-fractionated radiation, which compresses your treatments into just a few visits rather than several days in a row.

    External radiation therapy

Using advanced external radiation therapy equipment, we can precisely target radiation to destroy tumors in your body. Additionally, we have technology to allow radiation beams to conform to the shape of the cancerous mass and minimize exposure to nearby healthy tissue. Your oncologist will discuss the different types of external radiation treatment types available at Genesis, which include:

    • Intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT)
    • Image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT)
    • Stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT)
    • Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS)

    Internal radiation therapy

If you have breast, cervical, liver or prostate cancer, you may be a candidate for internal radiation therapies. Some of these therapies involve the placement of radioactive seeds into or near your tumor to minimize radiation exposure to healthy tissue and reduce treatment time. Other radiation techniques involve hormone treatments that starve tumors of the hormones they need to grow. Your team of medical and radiation oncologists will discuss the right treatment plan for you, which may include:

    • Brachytherapy
    • High-dose rate (HDR) brachytherapy
    • Hormone therapy
    • Selective internal radiation therapy (SIRT)

    Same day testing and results

In most centers, you wait days for test results. We understand this can be very stressful, so at the Genesis Cancer Care Center, we make sure you have your results the same day. We also coordinate blood draws, chemotherapy sessions and doctors’ visits in the same day to help you avoid extra trips. We’ll even schedule an appointment the same day your family doctor refers you.

We offer same-day testing and results for the following:

    • Cardiac testing
    • CT scans
    • Lab results
    • Mammograms
    • MRIs
    • PET scans
    • Ultrasounds
    • X-rays

    Surgical services

Your doctor may recommend a surgical procedure to remove tumors, prevent part of your body from developing cancer, or restore your appearance after cancer treatment. Genesis offers a full range of the most up-to-date surgical procedures performed by our board-certified surgical specialists.

    Breast cancer surgery

Once breast cancer is detected or diagnosed, surgical treatment plans need to be made to remove the cancer and reduce the chance of the cancer returning. The Genesis Breast Care Center offers patients several surgical options.

    • Breast biopsy, core
    • Breast biopsy, needle aspiration
    • Breast biopsy, open/lumpectomy
    • Deep inferior epigastric perforator flap (DIEP)
    • Flap
    • Lumpectomy
    • Mastectomy

    General surgery

The Genesis Center of Surgical Excellence has a team of highly skilled general and trauma surgeons with complementary expertise who provide thorough surgical care using the highest level of surgical technology. Our surgeons recognize the impact that an operation can have on you and your family. That’s why we approach your cancer surgery with the quality care and expertise you require. The team performs surgical treatment of the following cancers:

    • Breast
    • Colon
    • Gallbladder
    • Head and neck
    • Hernia
    • Melanoma and other skin cancers
    • Rectal
    • Stomach

    Robotic cancer surgery

Depending on your condition, your surgeon may use robotic surgical technology or another minimally invasive approach that speeds your recovery. Robotic surgery uses specialized surgical instruments that mimic the movement of your surgeon’s hands and fingers with more precision and scaled movements. Your surgeon has a magnified, 3D view of the surgical field. Patients benefit from a reduced hospital stay after surgery, less postoperative pain, shorter recovery time and smaller incisions. Our board-certified surgeons are trained to perform the following robotics procedures:

    • Colon resection
    • Hysterectomy
    • Laparoscopic assisted vaginal hysterectomy (LAVH)
    • Lymph node dissection
    • Partial nephrectomy
    • Radical hysterectomy
    • Radical prostatectomy
    • Robotic partial cystectomy

    Plastic surgery

Our team of plastic surgeons works with our breast surgeon to offer same-day reconstruction when having a mastectomy. Patients no longer need to travel out of town for delayed reconstruction.
    Our team offers:

    • Deep inferior epigastric perforator Flap (DIEP)
    • Flap
