From day one

As we celebrated Genesis Hospital’s 10th anniversary in June, we reflected on the incredible families we care for and the compassionate traditions that have always anchored our mission, vision and values.

Our faith-based mission of providing exceptional care began in 1891, when a local group of 84 dedicated Protestant women founded the 12-bed Zanesville City Hospital.

In 1907, the name was changed to Bethesda Hospital, one of our two future sponsors. The origin of our other sponsor began in 1900 when the Margaret Blue Sanitarium was donated to the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity to operate under their leadership and healing ministry. It was renamed Good Samaritan Hospital in 1902.

Over the past 125 years, we have proudly embraced our faith-based roots to provide the best healthcare to Southeastern Ohio. For us, faith-based healthcare means caring for people, including the body, mind and spirit, with compassion and expertise.

In this issue of LiveWell, meet three patients who chose Genesis for their life-changing treatments and for help through their recovery. Not wanting to slow down, Jack Fitch called Genesis when he needed help with breathing and balance. After minimally invasive procedures for an abnormal heartbeat and a heart valve replacement, Jack has happily returned to his active lifestyle and is feeling great.

Your continued support attracts highly skilled physicians to serve our community. Join me in welcoming Anna Carpenter, M.D., to the Genesis Interventional Pain Management Clinic. Board-certified in chronic pain medicine and anesthesiology, Dr. Carpenter uses minimally invasive techniques to guide patients in the treatment of pain-related disorders.

Our mission continues to be a patient-centered healthcare system dedicated to helping you improve your health and well-being. Thank you for choosing Genesis.

In good health,

Embracing community

As we commemorate Genesis Hospital’s 10th anniversary of opening in 2025, this issue of LiveWell celebrates you, our remarkable community.

Our journey to deliver the best personalized care began and continues with you. Whether you call on Genesis for an urgent illness or ask us to guide you through life’s most important health decisions, we’re here to help.

In this issue, we check in with five Genesis patients from the last decade. They are enjoying life to the fullest because of their determination to overcome difficult health challenges. You’ll also meet Dale Marlatt, who chose Genesis for his minimally invasive heart procedure and feels stronger than ever.

Your support helps us recruit the best physicians. We welcome Arshia Khorasani-Zadeh, M.D., to Genesis Digestive Disease Specialists, whose patient-centered approach to gastroenterology is a great fit for our community.

This special edition also includes our 2024 Community Benefit Report. Over the last year, you chose Genesis to help with preventative care, heart health, stroke support, diabetes education, behavioral health services and more. You received first aid certifications to help others and called the free 24-hour NurseLine to find information about family health concerns.

You also encouraged the next generation to learn about clinical and other careers close to home at Genesis. Introduced in 2024, our Workforce Development program provides local students with hands-on opportunities to learn about healthcare careers while networking within the community.

Thank you for the ongoing opportunity to serve you. May you and your family enjoy the renewal of the spring season.

You can count on us

At Genesis, we care about your well-being and will help you meet your health needs by ensuring you receive exceptional medical care close to home. We continue to recruit exceptional physicians and adopt the newest innovative technologies. In this issue of LiveWell, you can read about our latest advancements in serving you.

The Genesis Heart & Vascular Institute recently became the first in Ohio to acquire a Veriton-Spect CT scanner, specifically used in heart care. This new equipment provides our expert cardiologists with the highest-quality images of your heart for the most precise diagnosis.

The Genesis Heart & Vascular Institute is also among the first in the state to use tiny drug-coated balloons to treat patients whose heart stent has started to close over time. This innovative, minimally invasive approach delivers medicine to a narrowed artery that was previously stented. This procedure restores proper blood flow to your heart and significantly reduces the risk of future blockages.

These latest advancements in medical care help us deliver high-quality heart care as a Top 50 Heart Hospital in the nation for the second year in a row, as rated by Fortune Magazine and PINC AI. Learn more heart-healthy information in this issue and on our Facebook page as we honor American Heart Month in February.

The future of hospice care

For the past 35 years, the Genesis Hospice Care program has served thousands of families through the Morrison House, the region’s only dedicated inpatient hospice facility.

For anyone who has ever had a loved one at the Morrison House, you know the lasting impact this program has for families during the most difficult of times.

Well, the current Morrison House building has reached the very end of its useful life and must be replaced. We have decided to build a new replacement inpatient facility to serve our patients and families for decades to come. In this issue, learn about the capital campaign we have started to fund the replacement of this special place.

Keeping you healthy

Read about six new physicians ready to serve you, including Christopher Leibold, D.O., with the Genesis Orthopedic Group, focusing on partial and total knee replacements and anterior hip replacement.

You’ll also meet Dean Daniels, who received life-saving heart surgery at Genesis. Dean encourages you to learn about your family health history to share with your doctors.

We wish you a healthy 2025. Thank you for your continued trust in Genesis.

Providing the highest quality care

Excellent patient experiences. Team collaboration. Successful outcomes. We’re excited to commemorate special milestones with our community in this issue.

Fortune Magazine and PINC AI recently named Genesis a Top 100 Hospital for the third year in a row. Because serving you is our most important commitment, we achieved this recognition with the work of our dedicated Genesis team and your continued support. Measures of excellence that contributed to our ranking include patient experience, exceptional clinical outcomes and community impact.

We’re further celebrating our second consecutive year ranked as a Fortune Magazine and PINC AI Top 50 Heart Hospital. Forty-seven percent of Americans have at least one key risk factor for heart disease. We continue providing our community with the highest quality cardiovascular care you know and deserve. Exceptional clinical outcomes, operational efficiency and patient experiences earned us this recognition.

Cardiovascular recovery

This issue introduces you to Brian Cooper. Brian was diagnosed with hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy, which enlarges and thickens the heart muscle. Thanks to the expertise of our Cardiac Rehabilitation Program, Brian received a personalized rehab plan that has changed his life.

Screening for lung cancer

If you’re at risk for lung cancer, talk to your doctor about a low-dose CT scan. This procedure uses less radiation than a regular-dose scan and takes only a minute to complete. The early detection that this screening exam provides can save lives.

Our entire team wishes you a healthy summer. Your well-being is our priority. We look forward to caring for you and your family whenever you need us.

Mission Moments

Saving a life when seconds count, taking the extra time to comfort a patient and family in unique ways and organizing a bedside birthday party.

We call them mission moments, and they happen at Genesis every day. These are the special times when our team members make our values of Compassion, Excellence, Integrity, Team and Innovation come alive for our patients. They are living our mission and are responsible for the extra things that make a big difference for those we care for and their families.

As a testament to their character, their goodwill also extends beyond our walls when they change out of their uniforms. You can routinely find our 4,000-plus Genesis team members out in our neighborhoods, building houses for the less fortunate, coaching and serving meals to the hungry and so much more. They are creating mission moments in our community alongside each of you who gives your time, money and energy to help others.

It is this mindset that makes our community special. And please accept my thanks for all you do for your neighbors, friends and our team.

Our growing team

This issue will introduce you to David Wu, D.O., our new Palliative Medicine Specialist. He has already become a great addition and is helping those in need.

A rare diagnosis

On the following pages, you can read about Jason Richardson, who, at only 39 years old, suffered a rare, ruptured esophagus. Thanks to a quick diagnosis and treatment, he is at home enjoying life with his family.

Community Benefit Report

When I think about Genesis, I am proudest of the people who care for our patients and families.  As I mentioned in the opening, they tirelessly give to help others, both through their profession and outside of work. I am also grateful for how our non-profit health system constantly gives back locally. Our annual Community Benefit Report, within this issue of LiveWell, highlights some of the programs and efforts we make to ensure everyone in our community receives the exceptional healthcare they need.

Surrounded by amazing people

From registration to starting IVs. From treatment to cleaning rooms. Everyone I encounter at Genesis is dedicated to performing their responsibilities at the highest level. And the national healthcare industry has noticed.

For the second consecutive year, Fortune Magazine and PINC AI have named Genesis a Top 100 Hospital in the nation and an Everest Award winner. The Everest Award recognizes hospitals and health systems that achieve the highest improvement rates over a five-year period.

All because of our team members and your support.

This prestigious accomplishment continues to make it easier to recruit the best physicians to Genesis. Throughout 2024, we will introduce several new doctors who bring impressive educations and experience to join our outstanding team.

Our newest team members

As promised, we have recently welcomed several new physicians to Genesis. On the following pages, you will learn how Ear, Nose and Throat, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Orthopedic, Cardiology, Surgery and Family Practice are all growing to serve you.

Your neighbors

In this issue, two of your neighbors share their amazing stories. Learn how a simple fall led to a life-threatening injury for Amber Allen. Also, you can read how Erika Wickham overcame cancer.

For your wellness

At Genesis, we care about your total health. Our desire is to prevent illness and injury any time we can. Learn how a colonoscopy can save your life, ways to recognize and confront loneliness, how to prevent falls and more.

I’m grateful

Your faith in Genesis HealthCare System enables us to position our team to accomplish amazing things. Our team continues to adopt innovative treatments to save more lives and help our community members live their best lives. I am grateful to work among them and serve you.

Thank you.

What matters most

In the last 18 months, Genesis has continued to invest in the latest technology, equipment and facilities. We have updated and doubled our robotic-assisted surgery equipment, implemented additional best-of-class software, opened the Genesis Coshocton Medical Center and expanded our primary care and specialty physician offices.

All amazing accomplishments.

If asked to pick our most significant achievement, my answer will always be the same. Building and supporting an outstanding team of caregivers. Your neighbors, friends and family members make Genesis what we are, a top 50 heart hospital in the nation and a healthcare system nationally recognized for our high quality, compassionate care.

We are grateful that we can provide our team with innovative technology and modern facilities to perform at their highest levels. However, the skill of our dedicated team members is and always will be the most valuable part of Genesis.

Building the team

While we have been busy building over the last year and a half, we have also added many new physicians. Join us in welcoming five more physicians who are highlighted on the following pages.

Our patients

As always, we highlight some of our recent patients within LiveWell. For the first time in this publication, we also provide a check-up on previous patients to learn how they are doing years after their life-threatening health scares.

Thank you for supporting Genesis and our team.

Mid-Year Update

I hope this message finds you in good health.

Recently, news nationwide has highlighted the increasingly complex landscape all healthcare systems are navigating. Genesis HealthCare System is not immune to these challenges, which include dramatically rising supply costs and significant labor shortages leading to much higher wage costs. Unlike most businesses, we cannot raise our prices to cover the higher costs.

These financial realities spurred us to make many changes. We quickly developed a comprehensive plan to streamline operations, reduce costs and maximize efficiency while safeguarding the quality and safety of patient care. At the same time, we opened the Genesis Coshocton County Medical Center to expand access to care and help us grow. To serve you faster, we launched several programs that reduced the time it takes to get appointments with our specialists. We are seeing progress in higher patient numbers and revenues.

Where we are going from here

I assure you that our long-term plan is to continue to innovate in ways that result in better care for patients and ensure the long-term stability of the Genesis HealthCare System. We are making good progress to grow and operate more efficiently.

We are committed to transparency and will continue to update you and our many community partners with announcements online and in the media.

We are grateful for the trust and support you place in us. The healthcare industry is facing an extremely difficult financial environment. However, we are made of strong stuff in Southeastern Ohio. I am proud of how we work together to give you what you deserve – local, top-rated medical care for you and your families.

Thank You is Not Enough

Over the last couple of chaotic years, you trusted Genesis to find solutions to unprecedented problems. You trusted us with your health.

During that time, our doctors, nurses, techs, support service members and everyone else on our team stepped forward to shoulder the responsibility of not letting you down. They worked as long as was needed. Their ingenuity delivered creative ways to provide care and obtain resources.

Our team did this because they know what matters most is keeping you and your loved ones healthy.

Even though they did not seek recognition, being named a Top 100 Hospital in 2022 by Fortune Magazine/Merative is an honor they deserve.

And they could not have achieved it without your faith and support.

I cannot adequately thank our community or team members. As part of our attempt to show appreciation, we recently started airing a TV commercial and web videos highlighting our team and patients. The people are what make Genesis possible.

Watch for the commercials on TV and online or visit genesishcs.org/Top100. Please know that we are eternally grateful for your trust and support.

Bringing physicians to you

As part of our mission, we continue to bring the best doctors to our community. On the following pages, you’ll learn how their skill sets can help you achieve optimal health.

Things that matter

A walk around the neighborhood. A retirement dream home. In this publication, you will learn about two community members continuing to do what they love because of the lifesaving care they received.

Bringing care to more communities

By the time the next LiveWell issue is released, the Genesis Coshocton Medical Center will have opened. Join us for a Family Fun Day to tour our newest medical center, enjoy children’s activities and more.

In good health,

Recently, Fortune Magazine/Merative named Genesis a 100 Top Hospital for 2022. In addition, we were awarded the Everest Award, one of only 25 organizations selected from the 100 Top Hospital list recognized as achieving the fastest rate of improvement over the past five years. Although Genesis won these awards, this achievement would never have been possible without you, our patients, your families, local businesses and the community. In short, this achievement belongs to our whole community.

Without your trust in our exceptional doctors and professional team members, we would not be performing at this high national level.

We have spent the last quarter of a century listening to your needs and doing all we can to meet and surpass them. We have used your support to recruit the best physician teams. We have recruited the best physicians and team for the cancer center, heart doctors who perform innovative surgeries and other surgeons who excel in minimally invasive procedures that, in some instances, enable patients to return home the same day of their procedure. Learn more about the newest group of physicians to join Genesis starting on page 4.

Your feedback and support also drove us to establish a culture where we constantly pursue clinical excellence, continually seek better options for treatment and find creative ways to impact community health. Learn more about these initiatives in our special 25th-anniversary section within this magazine.

As significant as anything, you have trusted us with your health. Within this issue, you can learn how Diane Wills trusted us to help her overcome cancer and

how Belinda Hohman came to us to improve the quality of her life with a knee replacement.

In summation, your support and decision to choose Genesis positioned us to grow, improve and reach a level worthy of nationwide recognition.

We thank you and wish you good health.
