The importance of having a Primary Care Physician
Taking care of your health is important at every age, it’s crucial for young women to take charge early and build healthy habits for the future. Having a Primary Care Physician (PCP) and seeing them every year can make a big difference in your life. You are giving yourself the best chance to address health issues while they’re still easily treatable.
Deanna Osborn, D.O., Board-certified family medicine, has joined Genesis Primary Care and shares why young women should visit their PCP every year.
Q: What can young women expect during a yearly visit with a PCP?
A: “We’ll review your family’s medical history, do a physical exam and catch up on your preventative care. Preventive care may include a Pap test or vaccines. We’ll also go over general health guidance to make sure you are healthy and on the right track.”
Q: Why do you think some young women hesitate to see a PCP regularly?
A: “You may be healthy, not notice symptoms that need to be addressed or be busy. It's important to establish a relationship with your PCP, so when you do need them, you don’t have to scramble to find one. PCPs can also connect you to other specialists, such as an OB/GYN, if you are considering pregnancy or are due for screening.”
Q: How can having a PCP help young women navigate their health and wellness?
A: “A PCP can help you live a healthy lifestyle. They may point out something that you didn’t know. For example, if you have a noticeable weight change in the past year, then you may need to talk about how to maintain a healthy weight. If you continue to gain or lose weight each year, you could become overweight or underweight, and then this can lead to bigger health problems. A PCP can help with early prevention and be there for questions.”
