Simple ways to stay healthy all winter
Your best defense against the cold and flu season
Cold and flu season can disrupt work, family plans and everyday life. Taylor Planey, PA-C, a family medicine provider with Genesis Physician Services, helps patients create a simple plan to stay healthy through the winter. Through preventive care, wellness visits and personalized guidance, she empowers patients to take control of their health and avoid common seasonal illnesses whenever possible.
Start with the basics. Frequent handwashing remains one of the most effective ways to reduce the spread of germs. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), handwashing education can reduce respiratory illnesses such as colds by 16-21%. Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after being in public spaces, before eating and after coughing or sneezing. It's also important to avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth, which can give viruses an easy pathway into the body. | Taylor Planey, PA-C |
This is also the perfect time to check in on preventive care. Staying up to date on recommended vaccines can help reduce your risk of severe illness from seasonal respiratory viruses. Talk with your healthcare provider about which vaccines may be appropriate for you and your family.
"The flu shot remains one of the best ways to protect yourself and others during cold and flu season," said Planey. "While no vaccine can guarantee you won't get sick, getting your annual flu shot can help reduce your risk of severe illness and help keep you and those around you healthier throughout the winter months."
Flu shots are available at Genesis Pharmacies to help you stay protected during the season.
Also, don't underestimate the power of healthy daily habits. The CDC recommend at least seven hours of sleep each night. Staying hydrated and active can go a long way toward supporting your immune system. The CDC also recommends working towards 150 minutes of moderate physical activity each week, along with drinking about 11.5 cups of water or healthy drinks each day. These simple habits support overall wellness and help you feel your best during the colder months.
Finally, remember that fresh air isn't just for summer. Opening a window for a few minutes, improving airflow in your home and avoiding close contact with people who are sick can help reduce exposure to illness-causing germs.
This winter, think of prevention as self-care. A few small steps today can help you spend less time under the weather and more time enjoying the season.
