Stay active without joint pain
Q&A with Genesis Orthopedic Surgeon Corey Jackson, D.O.
Summer brings more time to enjoy the outdoors. But for many, osteoarthritis can make everyday activities like walking, gardening or spending time with family feel more difficult.
Joint pain and stiffness aren’t things you have to ignore or push through. Corey Jackson, D.O., Board‑certified Orthopedic Surgeon with Genesis Orthopedic Center, answers common questions about osteoarthritis and how taking action early can help.
What are early signs of arthritis that I may overlook?
Common symptoms include joint pain, swelling, stiffness and trouble moving. You may also hear clicking or crunching sounds, or feel like a joint is less steady than it used to be.
Is arthritis something to expect as I age?
Your chance of getting arthritis increases as you get older, but it’s not something you should expect. Seeking care for early symptoms can help you stay moving for many years.
What are tips to protect joints while staying active?
Start with 5 to 10 minutes of light movement, such as marching in place or gentle arm circles. Alternate with low-impact activities such as walking, swimming or cycling. Slowly increase activity and listen to your body.
When should I see my doctor about symptoms?
If pain is interfering with daily life, it’s a sign to be proactive and talk with your doctor. Arthritis can be managed, and timely treatment can help you stay independent.
Fact or fiction?
Arthritis pain only happens after strenuous activity.
Fiction. Pain can get worse with activity, standing for a long time or repeated movement. It can also happen during everyday tasks like household chores.
Stiff joints in the morning can be a sign of arthritis.
Fact. Morning stiffness is a common early symptom. It’s brief and often improves within 30 minutes of movement.
Additional tips:
While osteoarthritis can’t always be prevented, age, sex and genetics play a role. Staying active, maintaining a healthy weight, and doing low-impact exercise can help lower your risk and protect your joints.
