Listening to your body
Knowing when it's time to seek care
You've been exhausted for weeks, but you blame it on a busy schedule. Your headaches seem more frequent, but you assume it's stress. That stomach issue you've been dealing with? You'll get around to mentioning it eventually.
Life moves fast, and it's easy to brush off symptoms that don't seem serious. However, your body wants you to pay attention.
Many women become experts at pushing through discomfort. Between work, family, social commitments and everything else on the calendar, it can feel easier to ignore a problem than make time for a doctor's appointment. The challenge is knowing when a symptom is temporary and when it's worth a closer look.
Pay attention to symptoms that are new, persistent or affect your daily life. According to the National Library of Medicine, ongoing fatigue, frequent headaches, unexplained weight changes, digestive issues, trouble sleeping and shortness of breath during routine activities or changes in your mood may be signs that something deserves further evaluation. While these symptoms don't always indicate a serious condition, they shouldn't be ignored if they continue or worsen over time.
It can also be helpful to look for patterns. Are you reaching for caffeine to get through the day? Have you stopped doing activities you normally enjoy because you don't have the energy? Are symptoms becoming more frequent or lasting longer than they used to? According to Harvard Health, keeping track of changes, even in a notes app, can help you recognize trends and give your healthcare provider valuable information.
Your body knows what is normal for you. Suppose something feels different, even if you can't quite explain why, trust your instincts. You don't need to wait until a symptom becomes severe before bringing it up with a healthcare provider.
The good news is that seeking care early can often provide answers, peace of mind, or identify concerns before they become larger problems. Healthcare providers are there to help you understand what's happening and create a plan that supports your health goals.
Listening to your body is about paying attention, asking questions and giving yourself the same care you give to others.
