Why does a new hospice facility matter?

Carolyn Quinn

“I was exhausted caring for my mother at home as she neared the end,” said Carolyn Quinn, daughter of a hospice patient. “Genesis picked her up and took her to the Morrison House. I slept for 10 hours a night for two nights, and then they brought her home, and I was rested and ready to care for her so she could pass where she wanted.”

This is one of countless stories told by hospice patients’ family members and loved ones. As the region’s only dedicated inpatient hospice facility, the Morrison House has provided much-needed support for thousands of families during their most difficult times.

After serving our community for over 35 years, the Morrison House has reached the very end of its useful life. With the help of the community, partners and the Genesis team, we are committed to continuing to provide hospice service both at home and in a new dedicated inpatient facility.

The J.W. & M.H. Straker Charitable Foundation was extremely generous in making a donation to name the new facility. The Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity also demonstrated their generosity by donating the land across the street from the current Morrison House for the new building’s location.

With your support, we will fulfill our promise to build a new facility and ensure our nonprofit, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Five-Star Rated Hospice facility continues to provide the vital care you’ve come to know and trust.

Your contribution will support private patient rooms and bathrooms with beautiful garden views and so much more.

If you would like more information or to contribute, please visit genesishcs.org/foundation or call 740-454-5052.

Thank you for helping us support our community’s future.

Genesis Hospice Care builds for the future

For the past 35 years, the Genesis Hospice Care program has served thousands of families through the Morrison House, the region’s only dedicated inpatient hospice facility.

For anyone who has ever had a loved one at the Morrison House, you know the lasting impact this program has for families during the most difficult of times.

As a reflection of our commitment to providing you and your loved ones with exceptional care, Genesis Hospice Care received a five-star rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) based on family and caregiver experiences.

We are also the only hospice in our area with a dedicated inpatient facility, the Morrison House, to provide symptom management or respite care.

Morrison House opened in 1987 after the land was donated by Dr. Robert Morrison, a local physician. It was built by donations from the community and employees. It has served this community for over 35 years, providing a destination for families and patients to have comforting, compassionate, end-of-life care.

Morrison House is aging

The current Morrison House building has reached the very end of its useful life and must be replaced. We have decided to build a new replacement inpatient facility to serve our patients and families for decades to come.

We are committed to continuing to provide hospice services both at home and in a dedicated inpatient facility. The new building will be constructed on the greenspace across from the current Morrison House on Forest Avenue in Zanesville.

The building will have all private rooms with private bathrooms and access to the garden from each room. We plan to keep all current amenities, such as the Reflection Room, as well as some upgrades, such as larger patient rooms to accommodate family.

Making it possible

We are kicking off a $6 million capital campaign to raise the necessary funds to construct and equip the new facility. We are immensely grateful to the J.W. & M.H. Straker Charitable Foundation for its naming-level donation. Our thanks also go to the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity for their donation of the land.

Every donation, small or large, will help us reach our $6 million goal to make the new facility a reality. Donations can be pledged to pay over 5 years. Thank you for your support as we build for our community’s future.

Genesis Hospice Care Receives Five-Star Quality Rating

Submitted by Kyle.Norton on

Genesis HealthCare System’s Hospice Care program has been recognized with a Five-Star Quality Rating from the Centers of Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), the highest possible rating. CMS determines the rating based on three publicly reported sets of data: the Hospice Item Set (HIS), Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers & Systems (CAHPS®) Hospice Survey data and administrative data (Medicare claims).

“As a nonprofit hospice provider, our team is committed to providing the highest quality of compassionate, end-of-life care to our patients and their families,” said Pebbles Kieber, Director of Genesis Cancer, Palliative Medicine and Hospice Services. “The Five-Star Quality Rating from the CMS is a testament to our efforts, and we are honored that our patients’ families recognize the quality of our care.”

Genesis Hospice Care provides services to patients in their homes; in Morrison House, the area’s only inpatient hospice facility; and in nursing facilities during the end stages of a life-limiting illness. Families and caregivers are supported throughout patients’ care, and bereavement services are also available. To learn more about Genesis Hospice Care, visit genesishcs.org/hospice.

Choosing a Hospice Care Provider

Submitted by emily.griffin on

Life is a journey, and when your loved one enters the last stages of that journey due to a serious illness, it’s comforting to know the same local healthcare system caring for your loved one will also be there to help you and your family when you need it the most.

When and how to choose hospice

When it’s not possible to cure a serious illness or a loved one doesn’t want to undergo further treatment, it’s wise to consider hospice care. So, how do you choose a hospice provider? How can you find information about hospice services? We want to help you understand the hospice options in our community and how to choose one that will best meet the needs of your loved one and your family.

For example, is your hospice provider a for-profit or a non-profit organization? What kind of hospice services does the provider offer, such as in the home, in the hospital, at an outside facility that specializes only in hospice care, or in assisted living or nursing facilities?

Does your insurance cover hospice?

If not, or you don’t have insurance, how expensive would hospice care be for your loved one?

We have a list of questions you may want to ask when considering a hospice provider. We also have a list of all area hospice providers. Go to genesishcs.org/hospice to find information that can help you make these important decisions before your loved one enters the last stage of life.

What does Genesis Hospice offer patients and families? Genesis Hospice is the area’s only charitable, non-profit organization offering a full continuum of hospice care.

We are with patients in their homes or at the Morrison House, the only designated inpatient hospice in our area. We also provide care to patients if they need to be in Genesis Hospital or in assisted living or nursing facilities. Genesis Hospice is rated a 5 Star organization — the highest that can be achieved — by the Centers of Medicare and Medicaid.

Our team of professionals work together to manage symptoms so that patients’ days are spent with dignity and quality, surrounded by loved ones. Hospice care is also patient- and family-centered, with the patient and the family making the decisions.

As Genesis Hospice is a non-profit organization, no one receives a bill for care, regardless of insurance or ability to pay.
