Four simple ways to sharpen your focus
Ever find yourself staring at your computer, wondering if your brain took a coffee break without you? You’re not alone. Focusing can be tough, but with a few simple tweaks, you can help your mind stay sharp and maybe even impress your boss.
1. The superpower of moving
Sitting still for hours is a recipe for daydreaming about pizza. Short bursts of movement, like a brisk walk or stretching, can boost your focus and memory. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says short bursts of physical activity can boost brain functions like memory and thinking, which can help you stay alert and productive. So, next time you’re fading, try a quick lap around the office or a dance break.
2. Feed your brain
Your brain loves healthy snacks as much as you do. Foods rich in omega-3s (think salmon or walnuts), whole grains and leafy greens can help prevent cognitive decline, making it easier to focus. Harvard Health recommends a balanced diet for better brain function. Even better, as a bonus, this diet is good for your heart, too.
3. Move after meals
Feeling sleepy after lunch? You’re not imagining it. A short, brisk walk after eating can help you avoid the dreaded afternoon slump and keep your mind sharp. Michigan State University Health Care has an article on their website, backed by a study that says five minutes of fast walking can speed up how quickly your brain thinks, plans, focuses and multitasks.
4. Breaks can be your friend
Trying to focus for hours without a break is like trying to build Rome in a day. The Pomodoro Technique (work for 25 minutes, break for 5) is one method for maintaining focus for extended periods. Learn more from a study on the National Library of Medicine website.
So, next time your mind wanders, remember to move a little, eat smart and give yourself a break. Your brain will thank you.
