Genesis Heartburn Center

Chronic heartburn is more than an annoyance. It can interfere with your daily activities, keep you from enjoying life and eventually cause other health problems. If you suffer from heartburn more than once a week, contact your doctor or the Heartburn Center to find out if a ManoScan esophageal manometry test or Bravo Reflux test is appropriate for you.

About the ManoScan esophageal manometry test

  • Determines how well the esophagus (food pipe) functions by measuring the pressure as it squeezes
  • Typically takes less than 30 minutes
  • Your nose or throat could be numbed with a spray or gel
  • A small catheter is inserted through your nose into your stomach
  • You can breathe, swallow and talk during the test
  • After the test, you can drive home and resume daily activities
  • Your doctor will go over the results at a follow-up visit

About the Bravo Reflux test

  • Measures your gastroesophageal reflux symptoms
  • You will receive conscious sedation before a miniature capsule is temporarily attached to your esophagus
  • The capsule continually measures the pH in your esophagus and transmits results to the recorder you wear on a belt
  • After you leave the doctor’s office, you can continue your normal activities if you keep the recorder within three feet of your body
  • During the test, typically 48 to 96 hours, you should eat and participate in normal activities. You will also need to write down when you eat, lie down and have reflux symptoms (coughing, heartburn or regurgitation)
  • When the test is completed, you will return the recorder and diary and schedule a follow-up visit to review the results
