Cardiac Surgery

Cardiothoracic Surgeon Trevor Ellison, M.D., Ph.D., recently joined the Genesis Heart & Vascular Group, serving as Medical Director. In this role, he oversees cardiothoracic services at the Genesis Heart & Vascular Institute and will lead the clinical team in cardiac surgery.

As a surgeon, he will perform a full range of traditional and minimally invasive heart procedures, such as aortic surgery, coronary artery bypass grafting, TAVR, TEVAR, MitraClip and open valve repair and replacement.

Dr. Ellison said that the intricacy, nuance and technical skill required to perform operations with outcomes that are seen immediately is what drew him to cardiology. “There is non-stop variety, and the field is developing so rapidly that it requires constant study — both of which I enjoy.”

Growing up, Dr. Ellison witnessed frequent medical care given to his three siblings, all of whom have special needs. His brother has cerebral palsy and needed to undergo many orthopedic surgeries, which opened Dr. Ellison’s eyes to the medical profession. From the age of 12, he knew he wanted to become a doctor.

Dr. Ellison was awarded a prestigious scholarship from the Gates Cambridge Trust through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. With the scholarship, he focused on international medical relief while earning his MBA from the University of Cambridge in Cambridge, England.

Outside of work, Dr. Ellison’s favorite activity is to spend time with his family. He and his wife have two girls, ages 5 and 9, and two boys, ages 11 and 13.

Dr. Ellison is accepting new patients by physician referral. His office is in the Genesis Heart & Vascular Institute, 955 Bethesda Drive, First Floor, Zanesville. The office phone number is 740-454-0804

“One of the nice things about interventional cardiology is you can see the impact instantaneously on patients’ lives. When I open a closed artery during a heart attack or place a new valve and watch the pressure decrease, I know I made a difference,” said Kinan Kassar, M.D., who joined the Genesis Heart & Vascular Group in July, specializing in interventional cardiology.

Cardiology is continually being divided into specialties. Dr. Kassar said the availability of a cardiologist locally with training in different areas, such as interventions, structural heart and imaging, is important. A cardiologist must be able to look a patient’s condition as a whole and interpret data to determine the best treatment plan.

“Patient management here is about prescribing medications and helping our patients have access to them,” Dr. Kassar said. He also said it’s essential to counsel patients to help them make healthier choices.

Part of the care includes utilizing Genesis’ advanced technology or finding innovative ways to use existing technology. “Computed tomography has been used to image the body for decades but is new for the coronary field,” Dr. Kassar said. “It’s a valuable tool for physicians to investigate coronary artery disease in low to moderate risk patients complaining of angina.”

Dr. Kassar said computed tomography also helps determines a patient’s cardiovascular risk and guides preventative measures through coronary calcium scoring. Additionally, CT scan imaging has become the most important method for planning certain procedures.

Dr. Kassar’s experience practicing medicine in Syria made him mindful of certain aspects of patient care, including how socioeconomic status, access to healthy food and other challenges affect medication compliance.

“Interventional cardiology requires a full understanding of the patient’s condition,” Dr. Kassar said. “Multidisciplinary decision-making and collaboration between specialties create the best treatment plan,” he said.

Following a workday, Dr. Kassar usually rides his bike or runs. “Spending time outdoors helps me recharge for the next exciting day in the cath lab,” he said.

Dr. Kassar’s office is in the Genesis Heart & Vascular Institute, 955 Bethesda Drive, First Floor, Zanesville. His phone number is 740-454-0804. Dr. Kassar is accepting new patients by physician referral.

Spotlight on Puneetpal S. Bains, M.D.

“An endocrinologist is a detective who looks for clues and asks pertinent questions to solve a case,” said Puneetpal S. Bains, M.D., who joined Genesis Endocrinology in March. He was drawn to endocrinology by its complexity. “I have always loved solving problems, and this specialty allows me to investigate complex issues and fix them,” Dr. Bains said. “Moreover, endocrinology also presents an intersection between medicine and technology. I find this specialty very rewarding.”

Dr. Bains said endocrine disorders are increasing, but the number of endocrinologists is not keeping up with demand. “So, I am happy to bring my expertise to this community,” he said. Dr. Bains treats such common disorders as diabetes, thyroid issues and osteoporosis, and also treats gender dysphoria with hormone replacement therapy.

Dr. Bains said he functions as a team member with Genesis staff and a patient’s primary care provider. This team has a common goal of helping fix or manage an endocrine issue. “My patients are one of the most important things in my life, along with my family,” Dr. Bains said.

Endocrinological technology attracted Dr. Bains to the specialty. “Technology has changed our lives dramatically, and we continue to see its benefits in healthcare.” Particularly diabetes, he said. “Years ago, the only way for individuals to check their blood sugar was by poking their fingers four to six times a day or more,” he said.

Continuous glucose monitors changed that, as have insulin pumps. “Eventually, I think the insulin pumps will do more,” Dr. Bains said.

Dr. Bains spends his free time with his wife and two children — an 18-month-old son and a 6-year-old daughter. He also enjoys watching sports. “I am a big Cleveland Browns and OSU Buckeyes fan,” he said. “Hopefully, one day, the Browns can make it to the Super Bowl. We can all dream, can’t we?”

Dr. Bains’ office is located at Genesis Endocrinology, 860 Bethesda Drive, Building 2, in Zanesville. His phone number is 740-586-6690. A physician referral is required.
