A swallowing study shows the movement of your throat and esophagus while you swallow. The test uses X-rays in real-time (fluoroscopy) to film as you swallow, helping your doctor see why you’re having trouble swallowing.

If you’re experiencing pain, functional dry needling may be an effective supplemental technique along with your physical therapy. Functional dry needling treats musculoskeletal and neuromuscular conditions, aiming to decrease pain and improve functional mobility. It is not appropriate for all conditions or pathologies. Your physical therapist will help you determine if dry needling is an effective treatment for you. Functional dry needling is not acupuncture (traditional Chinese medicine). It is based on neuroanatomy and modern scientific study of the musculoskeletal and neuromuscular systems.

A very fine filament needle is inserted through the skin and into the deeper tissues that are considered trigger points to your pain. The sterile, single-use needles create a microlesion within the pathological tissue, breaking up shortened tissues, inhibiting a reflex arc from the nervous system to the tissue and inducing a mild inflammatory response, which mediates the pain. This mechanical and neuromuscular effect enhances the body’s ability to heal, which ultimately reduces pain.

The conditions treated can include neck, back and shoulder pain, arm pain (tennis elbow, carpal tunnel, golfer’s elbow), headaches, jaw pain, buttock pain and leg pain (sciatica, hamstring strains, calf tightness/spasms) and others. A specialized physical therapist administers the treatment. For more information, call 740-455-5151.
