An Emergency Department Visit

Welcome to the Emergency Department

Triage – What to expect when you arrive

  • Please tell the triage nurse if you are pregnant.

  • When you come to the Emergency Department, a nurse will check how you’re doing. This is called triage.

  • The nurse will take your vital signs (like heart rate and temperature) and ask about your symptoms.

  • People who are very sick will be seen first. They may go straight to a treatment room.

Safety screening

  • Everyone must go through a metal detector when they arrive.

  • Weapons and illegal items are not allowed.

  • This helps keep everyone safe.

Why do some people go first?

  • We help the sickest and most hurt people first.

  • If you have a smaller problem, you might have to wait.

  • Thank you for your patience while we care for everyone.

What is Basic Care?

  • Some patients may go to our Basic Care area.

  • Basic Care is for mild problems that don’t need a lot of testing or treatment.

  • You may see a nurse practitioner or physician assistant there.

  • This helps very sick patients get seen faster by emergency doctors.

  • Nurses decide who goes to Basic Care. If your condition changes, you may be moved to Emergency Care.

What is a Level III Trauma Center?

  • Trauma means serious injuries from things like crashes, falls or violence.

  • Not all hospitals can treat trauma. A trauma center is specially trained to care for these injuries.

  • Genesis is a Level III-N Trauma Center, approved by the Ohio Department of Health and the American College of Surgeons.

  • Getting help quickly at a trauma center helps people survive and heal better.

In the treatment area

  • You’ll be seen by an emergency doctor and a registered nurse.

  • You may also see a nurse practitioner or physician assistant.

  • You might be asked the same questions more than once. This helps keep you safe and ensures you get the best care.

  • You may need blood tests, X-Rays, or other exams.

  • Your doctor may talk with other specialists to help with your care.

How you can help

  • Know your doctors’ names and your medications.

  • Don’t eat or drink until your doctor says it’s okay.

  • Cover your mouth when coughing or sneezing. Use hand sanitizer.

  • Have your photo ID and insurance card ready.

  • Put on your hospital gown when asked.

  • Keep your voice low and limit phone use.

Your privacy matters

  • All rooms have doors instead of curtains.

  • We keep the doors closed to protect your privacy and reduce noise.

Visitors

  • Please limit visitors to two at a time.

  • Visitors should stay in the room with you.

  • Visitors should not wait in the hallway.

  • We may ask visitors to return to the waiting room if space is limited.

  • Let us know if you’d like us to share updates with your family.

Thank you for your patience

  • We know coming to the emergency department can be stressful.

  • We appreciate your understanding and patience.

  • You may get a survey call after your visit. We appreciate feedback.

  • If you would like to recognize a team member for excellent care, please ask for a star card, DAISY or ROSE nomination form.

  • If you feel you didn’t receive kind, quality care, call our Patient Experience Team at 740-454-5946.
