All of us have most likely heard the phrase, “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.” Some of us follow this advice and eat breakfast every day. Others ignore it and wait until lunch. No matter what kind of person you are, here is why you should be eating breakfast every day.

I know what you’re thinking. If I want to lose weight, I need to eat less. That is a myth. According to the American Heart Association, if you skip breakfast, you are more likely to:

  • Be overweight or obese

  • Have diabetes, heart disease and high cholesterol

  • Use tobacco

  • Not exercise regularly

  • Not get recommended amounts of important nutrients

  • Eat more calories and added sugars the rest of the day

If you want to transition to eating breakfast every morning, the change can be difficult. Make the change over time and slowly incorporate food in the morning. The Dairy Council of California states the benefits of eating breakfast include:

  • Weight loss

  • Weight maintenance

  • Diet quality

One of the hardest decisions we have throughout the day is what we are going to eat. This decision has the power to make your day if you are having a bad day. In the morning, it is hard to determine what to eat. UC Davis Health provides healthy options that are full of protein for you to choose from. The list includes:

  • Eggs

  • Yogurt

  • Tofu

  • Legumes (peas and beans)

  • Nuts

None of us may have realized the numerous benefits of eating in the morning could bring us. We want to stay as healthy as possible, and eating breakfast is one of the easy ways to maintain your health. So, what are you going to eat for breakfast?
