Genesis Announces Medicare Advantage partnership with four health plans

Understanding why Anthem and Humana Medicare Advantage plans are out of network for Genesis HealthCare System in 2024

For 130 years, Genesis HealthCare System has compassionately cared for the residents of southeastern Ohio. We believe every patient deserves access to high-quality care close to home, which is at the heart of the Genesis Mission.

What is happening:

Nationally, most Medicare Advantage insurance companies have created barriers to patients receiving the care they need, have implemented rigid and complex administrative requirements on patients and healthcare providers, and have reimbursed doctors and hospitals less than the cost of providing care to patients.  This situation is simply not sustainable for hospitals to keep the doors open and Genesis is no exception.

For the past several months, Genesis has worked to identify Medicare Advantage health plans who are committed to partner with us to provide exceptional patient care, to provide a streamlined insurance experience for our patients, and to reimburse Genesis accurately and appropriately for the care we provide. We are pleased to announce that we have created a contractual partnership with Aetna, Medical Mutual of Ohio, MediGold and United Health Group that accomplishes all these goals. These new contracts will benefit patients and Genesis to ensure that exceptional, locally delivered healthcare continues to be available for all patients we serve.

Despite our best efforts over several months, Anthem and Humana decided not to agree to the partnership that we achieved with the other four plans. Because of their unwillingness to engage with us in a way that allows us to deliver high quality, affordable care, these two Medicare Advantage plans will not be in-network with Genesis, effective Jan. 1, 2024. These changes do not affect Anthem or Humana Commercial insurance plans for working families, Medicaid or seniors with traditional Medicare medi-gap or supplemental policies.

How we are helping affected seniors plan for 2024:

As your local health system, Genesis is committed to continue being your trusted provider.  If you are a senior who currently has a Medicare Advantage plan with Anthem or Humana, we ask that you select one of the four plans we will be in-network with for 2024 (Aetna, Medical Mutual of Ohio, MediGold or United Health Group).  We recommend that all seniors work with a local, Medicare certified insurance broker to help determine the best plan option for your unique needs.

Genesis has been holding community meetings to help seniors understand the changes that have taken place in Medicare Advantage plans for 2024. If you missed a meeting or would like more information, call the Genesis Patient Resource Center at 740-454-4335 or 866-270-1944, ext. 4335, between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m.
