Genesis HealthCare System Receives National Stroke Awards
Demonstrates commitment to quality stroke treatment
Zanesville, Ohio (Aug. 8, 2019) – Genesis HealthCare System received the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s (AHA/ASA) Get With The Guidelines®-Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement award and the Target: StrokeSM Elite award. These awards recognize the hospital’s commitment to providing the most appropriate stroke treatment according to nationally recognized research guidelines that are based on the latest scientific evidence. This is the fifth consecutive year for the Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement award and the second consecutive year Genesis has received the award together with the Target: Stroke Elite award.
“Genesis HealthCare System is dedicated to improving the quality of care for stroke patients through the Get With The Guidelines-Stroke initiative,” said Bryan Bjornstad, M.D., neurologist and medical director of the Genesis stroke program. “The awards demonstrate our commitment to meeting evidenced-based clinical guidelines. Our stroke program is a true team effort; many employees and physicians work together to provide a high quality of care to the people of our community.”
Hospitals must achieve 85 percent or higher adherence to all Get With The Guidelines-Stroke achievement indicators for two or more consecutive 12-month periods and achieve 75 percent or higher compliance with five of eight Get With The Guidelines-Stroke Quality measures to receive the Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award.
To qualify for association’s Target: StrokeSM Elite award, hospitals must meet quality measures developed to reduce the time between the patient’s arrival at the hospital and treatment with the clot-buster tissue plasminogen activator (tPa), the only drug approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat ischemic stroke.
Genesis has also met specific scientific guidelines as a Primary Stroke Center, featuring a comprehensive system for rapid diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients admitted to the Emergency Department.
According to the AHA/ASA, stroke is the No. 5 cause of death and a leading cause of adult disability in the United States. On average, someone in the U.S. suffers a stroke every 40 seconds and nearly 795,000 people suffer a new or recurrent stroke each year.
