Genesis to Host Program on How to Take Steps to Control and Prevent Diabetes
Zanesville, OH (Nov. 10, 2014) – Genesis Spirit of Women is hosting a program for people who have diabetes or who are at risk for developing diabetes. Passport to Your Adventure Against Diabetes- Spain will give participants the information they need to protect themselves from diabetes. The event will be held on Thursday, Nov. 20 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at North Terrace Church of Christ. Although diabetes is a serious disease with the possibility of dangerous complications, people have a surprising amount of power to control and prevent diabetes by making simple but important lifestyle changes. The event explain the specific steps participants can take to lower their chances of developing diabetes—or, if they already have it, to avoid debilitating complications.
Currently, 25.8 million people in the U.S. have diabetes—that’s about 8.3 percent of the population. This includes 1.6 million children and teens. In addition, some 79 million American adults—including half of those over age 65—have pre-diabetes, a condition in which blood sugar levels are higher than they should be, but not high enough to be considered diabetes. Without making lifestyle changes like the ones that will be discussed at Passport to Your Adventure Diabetes- Spain, up to one-third of people with pre-diabetes go on to develop diabetes within five years. But by making smart choices about diet, exercise, weight control, smoking, and stress relief, people can delay or prevent diabetes even if their risk of developing the disease is high.
