Family Contributes to Tree of Love for 20 Years
When Shirley West’s granddaughter died in 1993, the family chose to give to the Tree of Love as a way to remember the 5-year-old. Since that time they’ve given $100 each year for a tree in memory of Sara West. “It’s a nice way to remember her, and it’s giving to a good cause that benefits a lot of people,” Shirley said.
Each year, a tree in memory of Sara is placed near the entrance to the hospital. “We asked if Sara’s tree could be placed by the door so she could be remembered by everyone who comes to or leaves the hospital,” said Shirley. “We felt that this would be a good way to do something in Sara’s memory.”
Family members contribute to the donation and gather for the tree lighting ceremony each year. “It gives us something to look forward to as a family to remember Sara every year,” Shirley said.
