Visitor Guidelines

• Visitors are welcome in the labor room to the degree mother desires and patient safety is not compromised. Other than the time of delivery, the mother will determine the number of visitors she would like to have in her room. However, the nurse(s) may ask visitors to leave the room while care is provided to the patient.
• Siblings must have an adult (other than the patient) with them at all times, and for baby’s safety, be symptom free of contagious infections.
• We ask that there be no more than three visitors after the doctor has been called for delivery. The nurse will assist visitor(s) to determine the best location to remain during the delivery. This is necessary to avoid contamination of the sterile field and to maximize safety during the birth.
• After the delivery, and when mother is ready, other family and friends are welcome to visit mom and baby.
• Because we care about our patients’ privacy, visitors are asked to help us keep patient room doors and curtains closed at all times.
• If you are not visiting with a patient in her room, it is necessary to wait in the waiting room to protect the privacy of all patients and to maintain a safe passage for emergency equipment.
• In the event the patient goes to surgery, family/visitor(s) will be directed to wait either in the patient room or waiting room. This is to ensure the privacy of all patients and to maintain a safe passage for emergency equipment.

Postpartum Visitation

• General visiting hours on the postpartum unit are from 2 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. Father of the baby, or special visitor, and grandparents are welcome at earlier times.
• For the new baby’s safety, children under the age of 12 (unless they are the siblings of the newborn) are asked to visit the newborn at home.
• Typically, a significant other or one adult of mother’s choice is welcome to stay overnight.
• Newborns can easily catch an infection. For baby’s safety always wash your hands well before touching baby. If you might have a cold, upset stomach, or any condition that could make the new baby sick, please wait to visit when you are completely symptom free.
