Physical therapy assists you with getting back to a normal lifestyle after an injury, surgery, stroke, brain injury or other neurological disorder. You'll receive treatments tailored to your specific needs. The specialized techniques are designed to improve your strength, range of motion, flexibility, endurance and balance to prepare you to return to your prior level of function.
At the Genesis Center for Occupational & Outpatient Rehabilitation (COOR), physical therapy focuses on the neck, shoulders, upper and lower back area, hips, knee and ankles. Therapists are involved with gait (walking) training, balance activities, sport or work specific activities, etc.
Occupational therapy also works with getting you back to your prior level of function and making the needed/necessary adaptations to promote function with daily activities, including but not limited to dressing, feeding, bathing activities following an injury, surgery, stroke, brain injury or other neurological disorders. Occupational therapy primarily focuses on the upper body (shoulders, elbows, wrists, hands) as well as the trunk. OT also addresses fine motor, sensory, visual, swallowing and memory issues/deficits.
Warm water is just the answer for stiff and achy muscles and joints. The therapeutic pool provides a weightless affect, which allows for exercising with less pressure to your joints and provides support or resistance for weak muscles. The pool is an excellent place to exercise if your joints are not able to withstand pressure from land exercises.
If you have balance problems, dizziness or motion sickness, your symptoms could be related to vestibular (inner ear) disorder, especially if you're over the age of 40.
Genesis' vestibular therapists perform visual screenings, positioning tests, coordination tests, and balance and gait analysis to evaluate whether your symptoms are consistent with vestibular dysfunction. Our therapists also work closely with physicians, neurologists, ENTs and audiologists to develop the best course of rehabilitation and plan for treatment.
If you have experienced a recent fall, feel unsteady on your feet or have spells of dizziness, you may have a vestibular disorder and should talk with your physician.
For more information on vestibular rehab, call (740) 455-5151 or 877-455-5151.
Speech Therapy is often used to improve quality of speech following a stroke or other neurological disorder. Therapists also work to help improve your memory and ability to problem solve after an injury or neurological disorder and can help you overcome swallowing difficulties, providing additional devices as appropriate.
Certified Hand Therapy
You depend on your hands to work every second of the day. So if you have a serious hand injury or condition, the last thing you need is to travel far from home for rehabilitation. Genesis now has a Certified Hand Therapist (CHT). Before we had a CHT, patients with serious conditions such as tendon and nerve repairs, burns, joint replacements or other hand injuries had to travel to Columbus for therapy.
Certification is voluntary and difficult to obtain. The arm and hand has intricate anatomy and frequently requires delicate surgery. The complexity of the surgery requires therapists to have advanced skills. CHTs must have at least five years’ experience including 4,000 hours or more of hand therapy.
Our certified hand therapist is one of only two in southeastern Ohio and has the experience and expertise to provide therapy for patients with serious hand conditions — so they can stay closer to home. You can learn more about the certified hand therapist by calling the Center for Occupational & Outpatient Rehabilitation (COOR) at (740) 454-5151.
