Genesis to Host Seminar on Preventing and Recognizing Gynecologic Cancers

Zanesville, OH (April 4, 2014)Genesis HealthCare System is holding a seminar to educate the public about gynecologic cancers, including the five types of women's reproductive system cancers in Southeastern Ohio.

Passport to Health: Preventing and Recognizing Gynecologic Cancers, will focus on the facts about gynecologic cancers, which will affect more than 83,000 women this year in the U.S. Presenters will discuss the five main types of women's reproductive system cancers and explain their similarities and differences, including recognizing symptoms, talking to your doctor, treatment options, and how participants can take a long term approach toward preventing some gynecologic cancers.

Early detection is crucial in successfully treating gynecologic cancers, but women's cancers often are difficult to diagnose until they're in an advanced stage. Symptoms of reproductive organ cancers can be subtle, often described as "like a whisper." But there are ways to increase the odds of catching cancer in its earliest stages, including regular pap smears, knowing your family history, and learning to listen to your body's signals.

The seminar will focus on recognizing possible symptoms, being aware of risk factors, how to talk to your doctor about your symptoms and concerns, and the unique characteristics of each of the five gynecologic cancers.  An in-depth discussion of reproductive system cancer prevention will include a guide to simple tests and vaccines that can significantly lower your risk of developing some types of cancer -- and that can protect your children's reproductive health as well.

Healthy lifestyle choices have been shown to reduce the incidence of several of the most common types of gynecologic cancers and each participant will receive a Passport to Health that will be your ticket to guiding you in the best choices to keep you safe on your journey to optimal health.
