2014 Physician Mission and Values Award Recipients

Congratulations to the four physicians who have been selected as the recipients of the first annual Physician Mission and Values Awards. This award recognizes physicians who go above and beyond what’s expected of them on a daily basis. These physicians have been recognized by staff for living the Genesis values of compassion and excellence daily! Here is the list of recipients under the value for which they received an award.

Compassion

Yahya Bakdalieh M.D.
Pain Medicine, Physical Medicine and Rehab

  • Displays an active interest in each patient, is attentive to the patient’s medical and personal needs, takes time to meet with patients and their families to understand the whole patient and what would best serve them, takes proactive approach to ensuring that patient pain is under control, takes time to really listen to what the patient feels and thinks about the problem and cares about how they view their situation, shows empathy while at the same time being up-front and informative about their health care and physical needs now and in the future.
  • Shows high level of respect for colleagues, takes time to know staff members, asks about their health/well-being as well as their personal interests, promotes ongoing learning for the rehab staff by willingly explaining disease process and conditions, teaching the nursing staff on neurogenic bladder and offering to provide education to acute hospital staff on the rehabilitation program and the transition process to rehabilitative care, welcomes staff to share concerns and comments in a positive, professional manner.
  • Looks for ways to provide compassionate care in a manner that will allow a balance between quality and cost containment while keeping the patient at the center of care, initiated the use of ultrasound guided images at the pain clinic for the injection of joints.
  • Volunteers his time and medical expertise in Saudi Arabia and Turkey to assist in Syrian relief efforts.

Shyamal R. Bastola, M.D.
Cancer Care, Hematology/Oncology

  • Treats all patients with dignity and respect, from the poorest to the wealthy, people from many cultures, beliefs and backgrounds, is honest and empathetic and takes initiatives to ask patients and families if they have any questions.
  • Consults with his medical colleagues at Genesis and in Columbus when appropriate.
  • Is sensitive to the emotional needs of his patients and consults with the chaplain when it would benefit his patients, families, or himself.
  • Listens to and accepts feedback after family conferences.
  • Recognized by a recent patient and family for easing their fears and treating them like family, being friendly and respectful and genuinely concerned, for responding personally to a question by providing a detailed answer and answering any questions that arose due to his explanation, and for keeping the situation in a realistic perspective.

Andrew Chernick, M.D.
Gastroenterology

  • Excels in care for patients and families.
  • Updates family after procedures and reviews possibilities.
  • Meets with patient and families, reviews reports, answer questions and then determines plan of care.
  • Personally makes follow up phone calls, reviewing reports of testing, answering questions, and encouraging patients to call if questions would arise at a later time.
  • Has expertise of treatment options and is willing to refer to an outside facility when the treatment option is not available in this area.
  • Shows genuine kindness and consideration with whomever he interacts.

Excellence

Rachel L. DeMita, M.D.
Infectious Disease

  • Advocates for infection prevention practices.
  • Takes time to educate regarding the disease process and the importance of maintaining isolation compliance.
  • Always willing to stop and listen to a concern or provide education and direction.
  • Is integral member of the Infection Prevention Committee and served as interim Committee Chair.
  • Does very thorough and concise patient assessment and documentation.
  • Provides excellent care and maintains a professional attitude.
