The new Genesis medical center will include:

• Private patient rooms
• A new addition attached to the existing Bethesda Hospital building
• The new addition will include:
  • Emergency/trauma department
  • Intensive care unit
  • Heart center
  • Operating rooms
• New outpatient cancer center
• New medical office building

Economic impact

• Project estimate – Construction will cost $160 million with an additional investment of $40 million for new medical equipment and furnishings.
• Community business impact – $250 million to $310 million
• Reduction in annual operating cost with new medical center – $15 - $18 million

Timeline:

• Design phase underway
• Groundbreaking – May 2013
• Medical center opening – 2015

Major design considerations

• State-of-the-art facility utilizing best practice design principles from hospitals across the country
• Patients want private rooms – all inpatient rooms will be private
• Centers of Excellence for heart & vascular, cancer, orthopedics, women’s health, neuroscience and trauma/emergency
• Single, expanded medical center will reduce duplicate services, eliminate patient transfers between hospitals, and eliminate confusion about which facility provides which service
