Designing Your New Hospital

Tour the New Campus

This 3D animated video will take you on a tour around the newly designed Genesis campus.

The new Genesis hospital will be designed around the way health care is delivered today ... with the flexibility to easily adapt as needs evolve and change. It will include all private patient rooms and will be 20 percent smaller than Good Samaritan and Bethesda combined.

Our first phase of design was to rethink the way we’ll care for you in the new medical center so you’ll have an exceptional experience any time you need to use our services.

  • We selected some of the country's leading health care design experts to be part of our team.
  • More than 100 past patients gave us input on features they feel are important.
  • Our physicians and staff have dedicated countless hours working with professional hospital planners to design spaces that will allow them to be very efficient in caring for you.
  • We visited newly build hospitals across the country to learn more about what is and isn’t working in hospital construction.

Creating Mock Patient Rooms

Preliminary floor plans and blue prints were developed using everything we learned in the first stage. Now we’re entering the final design stage. Mock rooms are being created to test out our plans in a real life way – a concept much like prototype cars created in the auto industry to test out the design of a new model before final production,.

The use of mock rooms is a standard best practice in the hospital construction industry because it helps eliminate mistakes that could be very costly to correct after construction. Even the smallest error could add up to really big dollars to correct. Here are a couple examples – if the placement of the booms that hold lights in the ORs is off just a foot from where they need to be, it would cost $20,000 to move each of them. Moving or enlarging a doorway would cost $2,500. Multiply small errors like these by the number of rooms we’ll have, and it would easily amount to a million dollars or more to fix what appear to be minor mistakes.

Testing the Space

Nurses, physicians, technicians and other support staff will test how well the room designs work by moving around the space as though they were caring for patients and giving feedback – is the furniture the right size, is the equipment in the right place, is it easy to move around to take care of patients?

The mock rooms will allow us to freely move around furniture, equipment, head walls, and even the location of plugs, lighting, etc. It’s a lot cheaper to test the design and make changes in a mock room than it is to make changes after construction is done and furniture and equipment has been purchased.

Using Best Practice to Get It Right

We have very talented architects, planners and designers for our project, and we have put a lot of effort into creating the right design on paper. But there are thousands of details to plan … thus thousands of opportunities to make small errors that could have huge consequences. Our planners have overseen the design of hundreds of hospitals, and they have always used mock rooms as part of the process. It’s a best practice step and one that is critical to designing a new medical center that meets your needs in the most cost-effective way possible.

We have an incredible opportunity to build a new medical center to support us in providing you with the highest quality of care at the lowest possible cost. We only get one chance to do this, and we will take every reasonable step to make sure we get it right. It’s what you and your family deserve, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.
