Fred & Bebe Grant Receive Genesis Award

The Genesis HealthCare Foundation has announced Fred and Bebe Grant as the 2005 Genesis Community Service Award recipients. This award annually recognizes an outstanding person in our area who has significantly contributed to the community and exemplified the Genesis values of compassion, trust, innovation and excellence. The Grants will be honored at a recognition dinner on Thursday, Oct. 6. SBC is a sponsor of the 2005 Genesis Community Service Award.

Fred and Bebe are often referred to as “Team Grant” because they work together on many community projects. Their motto is, “Serve God by doing good for others.” They have also given hundreds of hours to individual projects. While their leadership abilities have been apparent in much of their volunteer activities, they are just as inclined to roll up their sleeves and jump in to lend a hand with whatever needs done. Their contributions are varied in areas such as health care, the arts, safety, poverty, literacy, politics, education, hunger and community revitalization.

The Grants have been involved in a number of organizations, including the Zanesville Daybreak Rotary, John McIntire Foundation, Zanesville Art Museum, Helen Purcell Home, Zanesville Day Nursery and the Salvation Army. Activities like Safety Town, Festival of Trees, Alfred Carr Center Cake Auction, and the Daybreak Rotary Literacy Outreach Project have benefited from their spirit of community service.

Fred Grant graduated from Yale University with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in engineering and has an MBA degree from Ohio University. During his career, he served as a U.S. Navy officer in the Civil Engineer Corp; began a design and construction business; taught at MATC; was an officer in the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary for 29 years; served as director of the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District for 10 years; and served as Zanesville’s public service director and city engineer for 15 years until his retirement in 1992.

Mr. Grant is a charter member and past president of the Zanesville Daybreak Rotary, secretary/treasurer of the Zanesville Development Corporation, past member of the Ohio University Coordinating Council, and currently serves as a member of the Rogge Foundation Advisory Board, Boy Scouts Executive Committee, the Salvation Army Advisory Board, and the Helen Purcell Board, among other organizations.

Bebe Grant graduated from Lash High School and attended Ohio University, the University of Cincinnati and the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. During her career, she worked as a medical assistant at the Yale University Health Department; was in real estate sales and development in Upper Arlington; served as an officer in the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary for 29 years; and was a Girl Scout leader and commissioner as well as a swimming and diving official.

Mrs. Grant is a deacon at Trinity United Presbyterian Church, past president and lifetime trustee of the Zanesville Art Center, past member of the Genesis HealthCare Foundation board, and member of the Zanesville Daybreak Rotary, among other organizations.

The Grants married in 1950 and have two sons, Frederic IV and John Alexander; a daughter, Pam; three grandsons; two granddaughters; and two great-grandsons.
