As Genesis’ president/CEO, Perry will not only provide
leadership for hospital operations, but also for the organization’s
many affiliated organizations.
This announcement followed an
extensive search process that elicited input from a multitude of
community leaders, local physicians, Genesis board representatives
and hospital personnel. Moyer stated, “Genesis is not only the
region’s largest health care provider, but also a major contributor
to the community’s overall wellbeing. In addition to assessing
candidates’ ability to lead the organization, it was imperative that
we garnered input from local stakeholders to evaluate candidates’
ability to maintain Genesis’ role as an integral player in the
community.”
John Shaner, M.D., president of the Genesis
HealthCare System medical staff, commented, “To be truly effective
as a health care system, hospitals and physicians must be fully
integrated, working in close concert to ensure resources are
available to meet community need. Many members of the Genesis
medical staff assisted in defining required qualifications for
potential president/CEO candidates and participated in the interview
process that led to the selection of Mr. Perry.”
Perry, a
native of New Jersey, earned a master’s in business administration
at Radford University in Radford, VA. Upon completion of his degree,
he began his health care career with Carilion Health System in
Roanoke, VA. He and his wife Kelly have lived in the Roanoke area
for many years. They have two sons, ages 6 & 9.
Since
1988, Perry has served in multiple management and administrative
roles with Carilion. He is currently the president of Carilion New
River Valley Medical Center where he is responsible for four
hospitals within the Carilion system.
Under his leadership,
the hospital has been recognized as one of the ‘most improved’
hospitals in patient safety, financial and quality measures when it
received a Solucient 100 Top Hospitals: Performance Improvement
Leaders Award. The award is bestowed upon hospitals that improved
hospital-wide performance over five consecutive years at a
substantially faster rate than peers across the U.S.
Among
his many accomplishments at Carilion, Perry has led the development
of an extensive hospital replacement project, improved quality of
patient care, and regenerated hospital operations through
development of customer service strategic initiatives. He is also
credited with leading the organization to profitability through a
disciplined, dedicated approach; smart strategic decisions; and
development of strong, professional relationships with physicians.
He is a past recipient of the distinguished American College
of Healthcare Executive’s (ACHE) Early Career Healthcare Executive
Regent’s Award. Recipients of this award are selected based on
multiple criteria, including leadership ability, innovative and
creative management, executive capability in developing their own
organization and promoting its growth and stature in the community,
participation in local, state, or provincial hospital and health
association activities, and participation in civic/community
activities and projects. Perry also completed a two-year fellowship
program with the Health Care Advisory Board aimed at furthering the
professional development of senior health care leaders.
Moyer added, “Health care is a very complex, dynamic
environment with stringent governmental regulations and external
forces. This requires immediate adaptation of your short-term
strategic goals to ensure long-term viability. Matt has
demonstrated he has the skills, drive and ethical foundation
required to successfully lead Genesis in this complex environment,
and we are excited to extend this offer to
him.” | |
